Mike Reed (born May 26, 1974) is an American jazz drummer, bandleader, composer and music presenter.

Life and career

Reed was born in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1974, but raised in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago. He came home to Chicago in the mid-1990s after majoring in English and psychology at the University of Dayton, in Ohio.[1]

He played in the local jazz scene with David Boykin Expanse, Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra and the Josh Berman Quartet, among other bands. He led the improvisation quintet "Loose Assembly" and the post-bop quartet "People, Places & Things", with whom he recorded several albums on the 482 Music label.[2][3]

He and cornetist Josh Berman launched the Sunday Transmission music series at the Chicago music bar "Hungry Brain" in 2000. He also helped launch the city’s Downtown Sound music series, a free weekly concert program presented in Millennium Park that has featured an eclectic mix of indie rock, world music, and contemporary soul. He is founding director of the Pitchfork Music Festival and joined the committee that programs the annual Chicago Jazz Festival. Since 2013 he has been the owner and director of the performing arts venue "Constellation", and in 2016 he took over and reopened the "Hungry Brain", which had closed in 2014.[4][5][6] He is a member of Chicago’s AACM, where he served as vice-chairperson between 2009 and 2011.[4]

In 2009, while on their European tour, "People, Places & Things" were caught in a Neo-Nazi rally in the Czech Republic. The ensemble's members consisted of four Americans, two of which were African-American. This had caused their lives to be in danger.[7] Local police had found the group and provided them with a safe house and passage to Kraków, Poland.[8] This experience inspired Mike Reed to begin his "Flesh & Bone" project. Mike Reed had collaborated with poet Marvin Tate to provide the poetry that is spoken over tracks on the album.
