Michael Theodore Malinin (born October 10, 1967) is an American musician known for his work as the drummer of the Goo Goo Dolls. He is currently the music director and drummer for Tanya Tucker, having joined her group in June 2016.

Early life

Mike Malinin was born October 10, 1967, in Washington, D.C., the youngest of four children. His family soon relocated to Miami, Florida, where he went to high school at Ransom Everglades in Coconut Grove. He began studying drums in the summer of 1979. His first instructor was Mike Cottom. He eventually studied with Harry Hawthorne at the University of Miami until 1985, when he graduated from high school. Mike briefly attended the highly-regarded College of Music at The University of North Texas, in Denton, Texas. [citation needed] While in Denton and Dallas, Mike played in many bands, including Angry Jasmine, Last Rites, and Caulk. He played on Caulk's first release, titled Learn to Take.[1] In July 1992 Mike moved to Los Angeles with his friend and fellow musician Robert Cooper.

Career

From December 1994 until December 27, 2013, Mike played drums for the Goo Goo Dolls (but was not made an official member until 1998).[1]

Mike’s current position is music director and performer (drums) for Tanya Tucker, the legendary country music star. Mike hires touring band members and performs on a regular touring schedule.

Mike has contributed articles to “Modern Drummer” magazine, and “Louder than Stigma,” a blog originated by Dr. Peter Thomas.

Side Projects

One of Mike Malinin's side projects, called FORTY MARSHAS, debuted in June 2007 on Beatville Records, and in April 2010 he independently released The FORTY MARSHAS second album in other words... Mike and the many collaborating musicians comprising FORTY MARSHAS composed multiple alternative indie rock songs exploring their stylistic nuances and showcasing Mike and company’s many musical talents.

Personal life

Malinin is an avid ultra-marathon runner, having completed several 100-mile races, 50-milers, 50K runs, and marathons. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife and children.
