Michael Jackson (also known as Mike Jackson) is the chairman, chief executive officer, and president of AutoNation, Inc.[2]

Under his guidance the organization became the largest automotive retailer in the United States, using a more customer-focused, transparent and contemporary business model.

Jackson began his career as a technician for an automotive dealership in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, just after finishing college. He served as the Managing Partner of Euro Motorcars of Bethesda, Maryland, an operator of 11 new vehicle franchises. He also served as chairman of the Mercedes-Benz National Dealer Council. Jackson then became President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, responsible for the German automaker’s U.S. sales operation and 311 franchised dealerships.[3]

He was named Automotive Hall of Fame Industry Leader of the Year 2003. In 2006 South Florida’s CEO Magazine named Jackson CEO of the Year, and he was inducted into the Wayne Huizenga School of Business Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. In 2009, Jackson was named one of the “Fifty Visionary Dealers” of all time by Automotive News. He was also the first recipient of the Sports Illustrated "All-Star" Dealer Award. He was recognized as a ten time member of the Automotive News “All-Star” of automotive executives and was placed four times in Advertising Age's “Marketing 100” executives.

In January 2011, Jackson was listed #37 on the FORTUNE magazine list of Global Business persons of the Year. In May, Ernst & Young named him “Entrepreneur of the Year”. In the same year, Mike Jackson also received an honorary doctorate from the Livingstone College. In 2013 Mr. Jackson was appointed to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Miami Branch Board of Directors and in 2018 appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank.[4]

The Detroit Free Press announced that Mike Jackson was awarded the 2011 National Retail Leadership Award in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Jackson was named a 2014 recipient of the prestigious Horatio Alger Award, presented to Americans who overcome adversity to achieve success;[5] and was inducted during the award ceremony held in Washington, D.C. in April 2014.[6] In 2015 Saint Joseph’s University honored Mike Jackson ’71, with the annual Haub School of Business (HSB) Hall of Fame Award during a dinner in his honor.[7] In July 2018 Mr. Jackson was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.[8][9]

Jackson is married to his wife Alice, is active in a number of local civic and philanthropic interests, and serves as a Director of The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art.

Compensation

In 2009, as CEO of AutoNation, Mike Jackson earned $5,163,879, including $1,150,000 in base salary, $1,705,833 in cash bonuses, $2,087,993 in options grants, and $220,053 in other compensation.[10]
