Michael King Fitchett (born 30 November 1927 in Hawthorn, Victoria) is a former sportsman who played first-class cricket for Victoria and Australian rules football with Hawthorn during the early 1950s. He captained VAFA side Old Scotch in 1948 when Lindsay Thompson (later Victorian Premier) played with Caulfield Grammarians and Denis Cordner captained University Blacks.[1]
Fitchett featured regularly for Victoria in the 1951/52 Sheffield Shield season and scored his only first-class hundred in an innings against Western Australia at Perth, his 108 coming from seventh position down the order.[2] From his 13 first-class games he managed to score 589 runs at 32.72 and also took nine wickets. His football career lasted three Victorian Football League seasons from 1950 to 1952, playing 30 games and kicking 14 goals.
In 1953 Fitchett, aged 25, joined Sorrento Football Club in the Mornington Peninsula Football League for one season. After 19 senior matches, alongside other ex-VFL players Alan Olle (St.Kilda), Dick Kennedy (Melbourne and Fitzroy), Alby Morrison (Footscray) and Fred Stafford (Carlton) and ex-VFA player and TV executive Norm Spencer, a 17-year premiership drought was broken by a margin of just 3 points, Sorrento 12-6-78 defeated Frankston 11-9-75.
