Michael Burlingame (historian)

Michael Burlingame is an American historian, noted for his works on Abraham Lincoln. He is a Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies, at University of Illinois, Springfield.[1][2] He was born in Memphis. He was the May Buckley Sadowski '19 Professor Emeritus of History at Connecticut College.[3]

Life

He graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts in 1960.[4] He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland with a Ph.D. in History in 1971.

In 2002, he was involved in the Stephen B. Oates controversy, where he maintains Oats resorted to plagiarism in his Lincoln biography.[5][6] In 2010, Burlingame won the Lincoln Prize for his Abraham Lincoln: A Life.

Awards

Michael Burlingame was inducted as a Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and awarded the Order of Lincoln (the state’s highest honor) by the Governor of Illinois in 2009 as a Bicentennial Laureate.[7]
