MeseMoa. (formerly Musumen.) is an independent nine-member Japanese idol group, who declare themselves "self-proclaimed idols". They began as a dance cover collaboration unit with a focus on Morning Musume's songs, later producing their own music. In March 2013, they released their first original song "War Cry~What's Wrong with Pretending to Be an Idol~".[1] Since then, they have released 11 singles and 4 albums. On February 3, 2017 the group officially renamed from Musumen. to MeseMoa..[2][3]

Starting May 1 of 2017, MeseMoa. are a group under DD Corporation, a self-produced company run by their former member Zeararu. (Hiroyuki Shinohara). "DD" in the name stands for "Daredemo Dream" which means "anyone can dream".[4][5]

Background

The group was formed in 2012 by Shirofuku aiming to cover Morning Musume's dance "Ren'ai Hunter" per request from his favorite Morning Musume member Kanon Suzuki. The original 11 members - Shirofuku, Aoi, Kimagure Prince, Nibansenji, Nokkuso, Zeararu., Forgeru, Nozakibento, Nichan, K'suke and Asupara - adopted the name "morning musumen." after a fan suggested it in comments on their Nico Nico Douga video. After their first success, the group uploaded a dance cover of Morning Musume's "Wakuteka Take a Chance," the last video for K'suke as a member, although he continues to collaborate with MeseMoa. members outside of their idol activities.[6][7] Asupara left shortly after the release of the group's first original single, which was published under the shortened version of the group name, Musumen. (むすめん。). Upon the graduation of orange member Zeararu. in 2017, they renamed to MeseMoa..[8] After leaving the group, Zeararu. and K'suke continue to work with MeseMoa. behind the scenes.[9][10][11]

Privacy

As of now, Aoi (Aoi Imagawa) is the only member who has revealed his real name, Aoi and Nozakibento are the only members who have officially revealed their age. The rest of the members keep their real names in secret and a lot of their personal information completely or partially (only shared with limited audience at the special events) private. Although fans are able to stay in touch with some of the members' families, their real names, and often faces, should not be revealed online.[25][26]

Information leaks

In May 2017, MeseMoa. reported that a member of their staff, who also happened to be their fan, had exposed certain personal data about them on SNS. As a result, MeseMoa. had to prohibit the mentioned fan from attending their shows and post an urgent request for the fans to not spread the leaked information.

MeseMoa.メンバーが日頃利用させて頂いている施設の職員の方がMeseMoa.のファンであり、その方がメンバーの個人情報等をSNSに書き込みをしているという話を伺いましたので、本日、該当施設の方とその事実確認を含め話し合いをさせて頂きました。
施設の方、ならびに書き込みを行っていた方とも事実確認を行い書き込みを行っていたことが事実だと発覚致しました。
話し合いの末、書き込みを行っていた方には今後MeseMoa.が出演するイベントへの出入りの禁止をお伝えしました。
メンバーが出入りしている施設にファンの方が働いている、その施設をよく利用している、また偶然道端で見かけるということは今までもそしてこれからも起こり得ることと思います。その際、顔を合わせてしまうことや、業務上メンバーの個人情報を知ってしまうこともあるかと思います。ですがそれをSNS等、不特定多数の方が見られるような場所に書き込みを行う、周りの人に言いふらす等の行為は、メンバーの個人情報、日常、そしてこれからのMeseMoa.の活動に大きく影響を及ぼす行為となりますので、絶対にお辞めください。[27]

We were told that one of the personnel in charge (one of our fans) of the facility MeseMoa. members normally use, had leaked our personal information through SNS. Thus, today, we went to the facility to discuss matters concerning the truth of this issue.
At the facility, we filled out a form and another form of request for confirming the truth, and found out that such a thing did happen.
By the end of the meeting, it has been decided that the person who had been behind the leak will be prohibited from coming to any of MeseMoa.’s performances.
The fan works at the facility where we often come and go to, and from now on as well, we believe it is highly likely that we might happen to see each other by the roadside. In that regard, we think that there is also a possibility that when coming out to meet someone, our members’ work-related personal info might already be known. Nevertheless, SNS was involved, writing something like that where so many people have access will cause rumors about our personal information and daily lives to spread around, and it will greatly affect MeseMoa.’s activities from now on, so please stop this at all costs.[28]

Rules

MeseMoa. have a list of general rules published on their website which fans must follow, they also regularly remind about the rules concerning events and live performances on their Line Blog.

According to one of the rules, in order to avoid impersonation and misunderstandings, MeseMoa. prohibit using photos of them of any kind on SNS as icons, headers, backgrounds, etc.[29]
