Mersal (English: Zapped) is the soundtrack album for the 2017 Indian film of the same name and was composed by A. R. Rahman. The album received generally positive reviews from critics. The soundtrack crossed 100 million streams within ten days, setting a streaming record for a Tamil album.[1]

Background

Mersal is A. R. Rahman's third collaboration with actor Vijay, after Udhaya and Azhagiya Tamil Magan. At the same time, it's the movie resembling the 25th year of both Rahman and Vijay in the film industry. The soundtrack album consists of four tracks. The lyrics were all written by Vivek, who collaborated with Rahman for the first time.[2] The music rights for Mersal were bought by Sony Music India.[3] The official promotion, an audio launch for the soundtrack, was held on the 20th of August 2017. Many celebrities, both who worked in the movie and special guests like Dhanush, showed up that evening. Rahman and his colleagues performed every track of the album. The audio launch event held a live telecast aired on Sun TV and also on several social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The first single Aalaporaan Thamizhan was released on 10 August 2017.[4] The next single Neethanae was released on 17 August 2017.[5]

Reception

The album received generally positive reviews from critics. Sify wrote: "ARR delivers a middling album that needs its leading star’s power to hit the chartsl" and rated it 3 out of 5.[6] Top 10 cinema stated, that the album was a "Magnetizing package from ARR-Vijay combo".[7] Behindwoods gave it 3.25 out of 5 stars and mentioned: AR Rahman weaves out a mass based classy album fitting in all the elements required for Vijay's screen presence!.[8] Indiaglitz gave a 3.25 out of 5 star rating, but cited: "Mersal’s album is a mixture of mass and class, the experience of ARR brings color to Vijay’s powerful screen presence.The 4 tracks are innovative and is a must listen for any ARR fan".[9]
