Meredith Whittaker is a research scientist at New York University and co-founder of the AI Now Institute there. She leads Google's Open Research Group and the Google Measurement Lab, the world's largest collection of open Internet performance data. She has advised the White House and Federal Communications Commission on artificial intelligence and cyber security.

Early life and education

Whittaker completed her bachelor's degree at University of California, Berkeley.[1]

Research and career

Whittaker joined Google in 2006.[1] She was the founder of Open Source Research.[2] Open Source Research looks to solve global problems in collaboration with academics. Whittaker is a speaker at the 2018 World Summit on AI.[3] Whittaker has advised the White House on Artificial Intelligence.[4][5][6] She has written for the American Civil Liberties Union.[7]

M-Lab

Measurement Lab was founded by Vint Cerf and Whittaker in 2012 to provide researchers access to open-source broadband measurement tools.[8]

AI Now

The AI Now Institute was founded by Kate Crawford and Whittaker in 2017 after a symposium hosted by the White House.[9][10][11] It is located at New York University.[11] It researches the impact of artificial intelligence on society.[11] AI Now is partners with the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, New York University Center for Data Science and Partnership on AI.[12] They produce annual reports that examine the social implications of artificial intelligence, including bias, rights and liberties.[13] AI Now will focus on four themes:[14]

  • Bias and inclusion
  • Labour and automation
  • Rights and Liberties
  • Safety and civil infrastructure
