Max Turner (born 24 January 1980) is a Scottish-German vocalist, producer and songwriter. He is known for being one of the core founders and contributors of the Puppetmastaz.[1], as well as releasing a steady flow of collaborative and solo projects in his distinctive style of rhythm & poetry since his debut on Felix Kubin's Gagarin Records in 2001[2]

Life and career

Early life

Turner was born in the hanseatic city of Hamburg[3] and began learning classical cello from an early age, later singing tenor in choir and picking up other instruments along the way. He was educated in english, worked in record shops, played vinyl in nightclubs as a teenager and briefly studied sound engineering before becoming a professional stage and recording artist. His family is prominent in modern dance; his grandmother was the choreographer Lola Rogge [4] and his father Peter Turner, a British journalist from Mumbai, founded a centre for the study of Tibetan Buddhism together with a number of Tibetan Lamas such as Geshe Rabten Rinpoche in the Gelug tradition[5]. Turner is a practising buddhist.

Career

In 1999 Turner moved to Berlin where he founded Puppetmastaz with his cousin Paul Pm and Canadian entertainer Chilly Gonzales[6] both of whom shared his passion for rhythm & poetry as well as for puppetry. They were joined by Taylor Savvy[7][8] to form the short lived rap-quartet The Bench[9] which featured on a Tommy Boy Records release among others. The album Lost Treasures[10] furthermore features early collaborations between the above mentioned Mc's and producers such as Patric Catani[11][12], Bomb20 and Nitro, all of whom are considered the artistic bedrock of the Puppet crew. Other artists that Turner has collaborated with and who influenced him during his formative professional years in Berlin include Peaches [13] and Gina V. D'Orio of Cobrakiller[14] as well as Jamie Lidell[15] with whom he collaborated on [16] the Mocky produced Puppetmastaz single Scandalous.

Since leaving Berlin Turner has drifted between musical styles as much as he's shifted between worlds, living a semi-nomadic lifestyle while touring extensively with periods of up to a 100 shows per annum. Working with Producer Marcus Rossknecht[17] he founded the band Meteorites[18][19] in Barcelona and spent the best part of a decade in Spain where he signed to Cristian Vogel's Rise Robots Rise Records alongside Supercollider. His first solo album The purple pro, produced in Stockholm[20], gained some underground recognition that garnered further momentum through a string of collaborative releases with producers such as SchneiderTM (on the album Zoomer) for Cityslang, Cristian Vogel[21] for Novamute and Matias Aguayo's De Papel[22] feat. Max Turner for Kompakt records[23]. He has also contributed vocals to several releases by Japanese sound artist Kouhei Matsunaga on labels such as Important Records, Wordsound and Autechre's Skam label under the alternative moniker Google Premiere[24]; together they have a side project named Internetmagic. Another frequent collaborator and long time artistic ally is Canadian director and fellow lyricist Adam Traynor who was also a key figure in later years of the Puppetmastaz.

In 2009 Turner left Europe to train in Carnatic singing in India[25], exploring the subcontinent's heritage extensively while in cities such as Puducherry and Bengaluru, spending a significant time in his paternal family's hometown of Mumbai and subsequently settling in the subtropical mountains of Tamil Nadu, at Kodaikanal, where he founded a music production company. He started a live project called The Migrations[26] with several collaborators which contributed to the Boarder movement in Colombo, Sri Lanka while also performing in metropolitan cultural hubs of india[27] . He continues to study the Melakarta Raga system which was introduced to him by Keralite Prof. Dr. P.V Bose[28] , a renowned south indian classical vocalist.

Since returning from a five-year sabbatical study period in India Turner has worked as an arranger, producer and songwriter for several projects including runway shows for Vivienne Westwood[29] whom he composed music and text for under the direction of Dominik Emrich for several seasons. While recording of new material is always ongoing and music Production for Puppetmastaz and other collaborative efforts continue he is also touring with his new spectacle "The Max Turner show" which features a mixture of music, masks and live performance connected to a story line that features various Characters called "Nature Boy & the Egg of fire".
