History

On September 20, 2017 at 11:33 am, a 14-year-old male student attempted to open fire in the school cafeteria but was quickly subdued by Angela McQueen, a math and physical education teacher. However, multiple shots were fired in the process, and one student was struck in the chest and was driven to a nearby hospital suffering non-life-threatening wounds. The shooter was taken into custody without further incident.

Athletics

The Green Wave have several programs that have enjoyed success in both the Big Twelve Conference, and their newest conference the Apollo Conference. Arguably, the most successful sport is Greenwave Football, which has produced several conference Championships in the Big 12 and Apollo conferences. Mattoon has had several play-off births in the IHSA State Play-offs in recent years.
