Matthew Victor Pastor

Matthew Victor Pastor is an Australian Film Director. Born in Melbourne he is one of the first Filipino-Australian narrative feature film directors to tell second generation stories from a Filipino-Australian perspective.[1] He is an alumnus of the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne Faculty of VCA and MCM.[2] His portrayal of the Asian diaspora depicts characters struggling with internalized racism, forbidden love and the Western perception of Asian masculinity. His narratives focus on young Asian Australians trying to make sense of their hearts, homes, and homelands. Bill Mousoulis the founding editor of Senses of Cinema has described Pastor as "the most dynamic young filmmaker I've come across in 35 years of indie film watching in Australia. He is the voice of the "New Australia" - Asian, LGBT, dexterous, vibrant." [3].

Filmed[4] in Hong Kong the film went on to win the Best Guerrilla Film at the 2013 edition of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Film director Amiel Courtin-Wilson called it “A highly personal, brave feature film debut.” The film went on to play local television in Australia.

BUTTERFLY FLOWER: Please Wait To Be Seated.

BUTTERFLY FLOWER is a 70-minute experimental film produced in Australia & Vietnam. Co-directed with Vietnamese director Lisac Pham, it premiered at the 2017 Kampot Readers & Writers Film Festival in Cambodia.[5] It features the poetry of Filipino artist, filmmaker Khavn De La Cruz. The film is a love letter to independent Filipino cinema.[6]

Fil-Aus Trilogy

Part one I am JUPITER I am the BIGGEST PLANET is a silent short film set in the red light district of Manila. Part two MELODRAMA/RANDOM/MELBOURNE! is a narrative feature film about a young feminist documentarian and her journey documenting the Men's rights movement and Seduction community PUA movement.[7] Part three MAGANDA or (Pinoy Boy vs Milk Man), is an 80's Filipino/Australian B movie throwback about a deranged killer dubbed the Milk Man who murders Asian international students & the assassin Pinoy Boy on a mission to stop him. The films are thematically connected through the exploration of Filipino Australians identity.[8] Part three MAGANDA is currently in post-production is expecting a 2019 release.[9]

In a review of MELODRAMA/RANDOM/MELBOURNE! Oggs Cruz of Rappler said:

Vague in terms of form and substance, the film, without even perusing its scatterings of plot and characters, is a brash reflection of the waywardness and captivating caprice of the unique millennial culture brought about by cross-border migration. The setting here is Melbourne, a city that the film depicts as one that is undergoing transformation into a bustling center of distinct Asian influences. However, its young and rebellious citizens, heirs of those from a generation that needed to make the city its home, are themselves repelling the waves of new migration, sowing seeds of division."[10]

The film premiered at the 2018 Sinag Maynila Film Festival[11] and was awarded Best Original Score (Fergus Cronkite)[12].

Current projects

To be released is Repent or Perish! [13], a feature film about a conservative Christian Filipino family and their second generation children set against the backdrop of the 2017 Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey.[14] Set in Melbourne it shows Asian Australian millennials[15] and their stories.[16]
