Matthew Laurance (born Matthew Dycoff) is a film and television actor.[1]

Early life, family and education

Matthew Dycoff was born in Queens, New York City, New York and raised in Long Island, New York.[2] He has an identical twin brother, Mitchell (born four minutes earlier), who is also a professional actor.[3][4]

Both brothers are graduates of Tufts University.[4]

Career

Laurance appeared on Saturday Night Live during its sixth season.[5] He left SNL after one season (albeit a short season, only 13 episodes).[6]

Laurance portrayed bass player Sal Amato in the 1983 cult hit Eddie and the Cruisers, and he was the only cast member besides Michael Paré and Michael Antunes to appear in the 1989 sequel, Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives![1] He also had a role in Streets of Fire,[1] as one of the two Ardmore police officers who enter the bus Tom Cody (Michael Paré) was on, making this the third film he appeared in with Paré.[7]

He starred as a detective novelist in Duet on Fox from 1987 to 1989.[3] He also appeared on television in thirtysomething.[4]

From 1991 through 2000, he performed the recurring role of Mel Silver, father of David Silver and Erin Silver on Beverly Hills, 90210.[2]

After Beverly Hills 90210 ended, Laurance left acting altogether, packed up his vehicle, and followed his gut and friendly advice/offer from Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K: NCAA all time winningest basketball coach) to Durham, NC to work for the Duke University men’s basketball team but he was not sure as to what capacity he would be working in. A position was created for him, by Coach K, as an in game bench reporter for the Duke Blue Devil Radio Network. He became quite the fixture amongst faculty, staff, the team, as well as the fans as he provided insight after each timeout as to what was said in the team huddle and what Coach K was relaying to the players. Something that was never done prior to his arrival. After almost a decade in Durham, he decided to make what was a bittersweet move to Kentucky to take a job to move closer to family, where he still works on the sports reporting side of things in Lexington, KY. He has never been replaced at Duke, or in Durham, and will always be a part of the Duke Blue Devil family as well as the ‘brotherhood’ that is the prestigious men’s hoops program.
