Matthew James Terry (born 20 May 1993) is an English singer-songwriter.[1][2] He won the thirteenth UK series of The X Factor in 2016.[3] He is best known for his debut single, "When Christmas Comes Around", which was released in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2016, and peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. His debut album entitled Trouble was released on 24 November 2017 and charted at 29.

Career

2016: The X Factor

Terry auditioned for the thirteenth UK series of The X Factor in 2016, singing a cover of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me", which earned him the maximum four yeses from the judges.[4] Terry was placed in the "boys" category and reached the live shows, where he was mentored by Nicole Scherzinger. Following the eliminations of Freddy Parker in week two and Ryan Lawrie in week seven, Terry became Scherzinger's last act left in the competition.[5] He ended up in the bottom two in week 9 and faced the sing-off against Emily Middlemas but was saved by three of the four judges.

On 11 December 2016, he was crowned as the winner of The X Factor 2016, beating Saara Aalto,[1] making him the second winner, after James Arthur, to be in the bottom two at any given stage of the competition. He immediately released his winner's single, "When Christmas Comes Around", an original song written by Ed Sheeran.[6] It is only the second time that the winner has released an original winner's song, the first being the second series winner Shayne Ward, who released his debut single "That's My Goal".[7] Following his win, Terry signed with Syco and RCA Records.[8]

2017–present: Trouble

In 2017, Terry featured in a new version of "Súbeme La Radio", together with Enrique Iglesias and Sean Paul. The single became a Top 10 hit in the UK and sold 200,000 certified units, scoring a Silver BPI certification.

Following that, he released his first single from his debut album, "Sucker For You". The single failed to reach the success of his previous two singles, peaking at 51 on the UK Singles Chart. A second single, a ballad called "The Thing About Love" was quickly released afterward. Terry performed the single on The X Factor UK as a guest performer. On the show, he confirmed that the album would be out on 24 November 2017. The single, however, was also unable to achieve much commercial success, also peaking at 51 on the UK Singles Chart. Overall, his debut album failed to perform well in the charts, with the album peaking at 29 on the UK Albums Chart. Terry’s album is the worst performing debut album from any X Factor winner ever, failing to reach the top 10 in the UK Albums Chart.

On 3 June 2018, Terry announced in an exclusive interview that he had parted ways with his record label RCA Records.[9]
