He is currently ranked number 15 in the Powerman world rankings.

Early life

Smith began his sporting life with golf. He was brought into the sport early by his father, Paul Smith, a golf expert.

Smith attended Trinity College in 2008 where he fell in love with the sport of cross country. To begin with he was no stand out runner but with patience and determination through the love of the sport was able to excel. He won the men's 800m at PSA athletics carnival against some tough competition in year 12. It was at this time he was introduced to multi sport where a childhood friend Kurt Wesley showed him the ropes of the duathlon, a race he did not know much about. Through the help of Eclipse Fitness (Stuart Durham) Smith fell in love with running and cycling. He went on to compete in both the sprint distance duathlon world championships and the standard distance world championships, coming away with two consecutive world titles. At this time he recognised his talent in the sport and decided to turn professional. Smith now races under an elite license and was to compete at the U23 Duathlon World Championships in Canada.
