Princess Matilde zu Fürstenberg (born Matilde dei Principi Borromeo Arese Taverna; 8 August 1983) is an Italian equestrian and horse breeder. She is a member of the House of Borromeo, an Italian noble family with historic ties to the Catholic Church and the Duchy of Milan. Through her marriage to Prince Antonius zu Fürstenberg she is member of the German House of Fürstenberg. Borromeo has competed in international equestrian competitions representing Italy and Monaco.
Early life
Matilde Borromeo was born on 8 August 1983 in Milan, Italy.[1] She is the third daughter of Carlo Ferdinando Borromeo, Count of Arona and Marion Sybil Zota.[2] Her paternal grandparents were Vitaliano Borromeo, Prince of Angera and Countess Donna Paola Marzotto. She is a half-sister of Beatrice Borromeo, who married into the Monegasque princely family.[3] She is a sister-in-law of Italian fashion designer Marta Ferri.
Career
Borromeo began working as a horse breeder on her family's farm in Italy as a young adult. Shortly after she began competing in the equestrian circuit, riding horses raised at her family's farm.[4] She has competed internationally in dressage and riding events.[5][6] She has competed with four hourses named Corante, Bradamante, Adavante, and Deante.[7][8] She has competed at the Global Champions Tour, Master of Paris, Master of Verona, and at the Piazza di Siena. She is trained by Alessandro Carcassi and Roberto Arioldi. Representing Italy, she has placed second in Monte Carlo, first in Tortona, second in Verona, and first in Truccazzano.[9] She ranked ninth on the first and second days and tenth on the third day in the CIS first class grand prix at the Milano Winter Show.[10] Borromeo has also competed representing Monaco.[11] In 2015, Borromeo served as chief ambassador for the Milao Winter Show.[12]
In 2016 Borromeo modeled Tory Burch's line of tunics.[13]
Personal life
On 11 June 2011 Borromeo married Prince Antonius von Fürstenberg, a member of the House of Fürstenberg, at Isola Bella, one of the Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore owned by the Borromeo family.[14][15]
