Marnus Labuschagne(pronounced [lʌbəˈskʌxni] or [læbəˈʃæɪn],[1] born 22 June 1994) is a South African-born Australian cricketer who made his debut for Queensland during the 2014–15 Sheffield Shield season. He also plays for the Brisbane Heat. He made his Test debut for the Australian national team in October 2018.

Early life

He was born in Klerksdorp, in South Africa's North West province, to South African parents. His family emigrated to Australia in 2004, when he was 10 after his father gained work in the mining industry, and Labuschagne attended school in Brisbane. He grew up speaking Afrikaans, and only became fluent in English after moving to Australia.[2]

Cricket career

A right-handed batsman, Labuschagne played for Queensland at under-15, under-17, and under-19 level, and captained the side at the 2012–13 National Championships.[3][4]

Labuschagne made his first-class debut in the first round of the 2014–15 Sheffield Shield season, against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.[5] Opening the batting with Joe Burns, he scored 83 runs in Queensland's first innings, featuring in a 99-run fourth-wicket partnership with Nick Stevens. Later in the 2014-15 season, Labuschagne was used as a substitute fielder for the Australian national side in the second Test against India, playing at the Gabba. While fielding, he took a low catch at short leg to dismiss Varun Aaron off a ball by Nathan Lyon.[6]

In Brisbane's grade cricket competition, Labuschagne plays for Redlands.[7] He has also spent two seasons playing club cricket in England, for Plymouth in the Devon Premier League and for Sandwich in the Kent Premier League.[8][9]

He scored 271 runs at an average of 45.16 and a strike-rate of 90.63 per 100 balls[10] in the 2016–17 Matador BBQs One-Day Cup and was named player of the tournament.[11]

In September 2017, during the 2017–18 JLT One-Day Cup match between Queensland and Cricket Australia XI, he became the first fielder to be penalised under the new rule of "fake fielding".[12][13]

In March 2018, Cricket Australia named Labuschagne in their Sheffield Shield team of the year.[14] In September 2018, he was named in Australia's Test squad for their series against Pakistan.[15][16] He made his Test debut for Australia against Pakistan on 7 October 2018, scoring a duck after two balls.[17] He had his baggy green cap presented to him by Michael Hussey.
