Mario Vrančić (Bosnian pronunciation: [mâːrio ʋrâːntʃitɕ]; born 23 May 1989) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Championship club Norwich City and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Vrančić started his professional career at Mainz 05, playing mainly in its reserve team. In 2009, he had a loan spell with Rot Weiss Ahlen. Two years later, he joined Borussia Dortmund II. The following year, he moved to Paderborn 07, who he left in 2015 to sign for Darmstadt 98. Vrančić was transferred to Norwich City in 2017.

A former German youth international, Vrančić made his senior international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015.

Club career

Early career

Vrančić started his professional career at Mainz 05.[2]

On 26 June 2009, he was sent on a season-long loan to Rot Weiss Ahlen.[3]

After his return, he was relegated to Mainz 05 II, and six months later he signed for Borussia Dortmund II.[4]

Paderborn 07

On 1 July 2012 he joined Paderborn 07, who played in the 2. Bundesliga at the time.[5] Vrančić debuted in the opening game of the season against Hertha BSC,[6] and scored his first goals in the next game against VfL Bochum.[7]

Vrančić was instrumental in his team's first ever promotion to the Bundesliga in May 2014.[8] That same month, he signed a new two-year deal with the club.[9]

Darmstadt 98

On 24 June 2015, Vrančić signed for newly promoted side Darmstadt 98.[10] He made his competitive debut in DFB-Pokal game against TuS Erndtebrück on 7 August.[11] He scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against FC Augsburg.[12]

Norwich City

On 8 June 2017, he agreed to join English club Norwich City on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.[13] He made his official debut for the club on 5 August against Fulham.[14] On 19 September, Vrančić scored a brace, which were his first goals for the team, in an EFL Cup tie against Brentford.[15] He scored his first league goal in a 3–2 win over Reading on 17 March 2018.[16]

International career

Vrančić has represented Germany at various youth levels.[17] He was part of the squad that won the 2008 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship.[18]

In August 2015, Vrančić received a green light from FIFA to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina.[19] Later that month, he was called-up by Mehmed Baždarević for UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against Belgium and Andorra.[20] He debuted in a high win against latter on 6 September.[21]

Personal life

Mario has an older brother, Damir, who is also a footballer. He also holds German citizenship.[22]
