Maria Cristina Finucci (1956, Lucca, Italy) is an artist, architect and designer based in Rome[1]. She is the founder of the Garbage Patch State[2][3].

Biography

Finucci attended the University of Florence graduating magna cum laude.

During her career as an architect, she has lived and worked in Moscow, New York, Paris, Brussels, and Madrid. Her projects have been published in various magazines and books.[4][5] Her furniture designs have been exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. She has collaborated as a foreign correspondent to the architecture magazine Controspazio.[6][7][8]

Her artistic research, started at a very young age, has encompassed painting, sculpture, architecture, design, video art, and film post-production. In 2010, her work was featured in a solo exhibition titled Paradigms at the Lu.CCA Museum.[9]

In 2013, Maria Cristina Finucci synthesized these experiences into a transmedia work entitled Wasteland, which led to the foundation of the Garbage Patch State, a nation of islands formed by the plastic debris adrift in the oceans.[10] She initiated the project at UNESCO Paris[11] with subsequent monumental public installations taking place in Venice (Biennale Arte 2013)[12][13], Madrid (ARCO 2014)[14][15]; Rome (Museo MAXXI 2014)[16][17]; NYC (United Nations Headquarters 2015)[18][19]; Milan (EXPO 2015 Bracco Foundation)[20][21], Paris (COP21 2015 New York Times)[22][23] and Mozia [Sicily] (Whitaker Foundation 2016)[24][25]. In addition to carrying out an ethical and environmental commitment, Finucci's work outlines an innovative art form in tune with contemporary media.[26]

In 2014, Maria Cristina Finucci received the "Golden Apple" from the XXVI Bellisario Prize and the "Civiltà dell’Acqua" prize.[27] Some of her works are in permanent collections such as the Bracco Foundation[28] and the Collezione della Camera dei Deputati[29].
