Maria Baiulescu (1860 – 24 June 1941) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian writer, suffragist and women's rights activist.[1]

Life

Maria Baiulescu was born in Brașov in 1860 to Bartlomeu and Elena Băiulescu.[2] Her father was an Orthodox Christian priest and her mother was active in the emerging women's movement in Brasov. They lived in an affluent area of the city and Baiulesco received a good education.[3] At this time the local leaders were talking and meeting to establish Romania as a separate country. Baiulescu argued that the new state should establish equality for women.[3]

She was a co-founder, with Ella Negruzzi, Calypso Botez and Elena Meissner, of Asociația de Emancipare Civilă și Politică a Femeii Române or the Romanian Women's Union (UFR)[3] and she served as its president.[3]

Baiulescu died in Brasov in 1941.[2]

Legacy

A technical college in Brasov is named in her honour.[4]
