Education

Spada received a BSc with honours from the University of Bristol in 1993, an MSc from the London School of Economics in 1994, a PgDip from University College London in 2000, an MA from the Institute of Education in 2001, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manchester in 2006 under the supervision of Professor Adrian Wells.[1]

Work

Spada has made a significant contribution to the understanding of metacognitive mechanisms underlying general vulnerability to addictive behaviours, identifying the role of metacognitive beliefs across addictive behaviours,[2][3][4][5][6] putting forward the first metacognitive therapy model of addictive behaviours,[7][8][9] and operationalising the construct of 'desire thinking',[10][11] a thinking style linked to the escalation and persistence of craving. Spada is also an advocate of employing idiographic and functional approaches to the conceptualisation and treatment of psychological problems,[12][13] supporting psychological therapists in working with clients taking (or withdrawing from) prescribed drugs,[14] and safeguarding young people from the threats to well-being arising from excessive technological use.[15][16][17] He is the author of over 120 peer reviewed scientific articles[18] and of the successful self-help book Overcoming Problem Drinking, an NHS recommended 'book on prescription' for alcohol misuse.[19][20][21] In addition to his published work, Spada is Editor-in-Chief of the leading addictions psychology and psychiatry journal Addictive Behaviors,[22] and founder and Editor-in-Chief of its sister journal Addictive Behaviors Reports,[23] both published by Elsevier. Spada also serves as a Director of UK SMART Recovery and is a Trustee of GambleAware.[24]

Personal life

Spada is the son of the classical concert pianist and musicologist Pietro Spada and great-great-grandson of the writer, poet and opera librettist Jacopo Ferretti.
