Manticore (DC Comics)

Manticore is the name of a number of DC Comics characters, three of whom were members of Onslaught.

Fictional character biography

Anastasio Corvo

Corvo was the first Manticore and a member of the first Onslaught team. He is a genetically-engineered man who wears a Manticore-like battle suit. He and the Onslaught auditioned for the Qurac President where they slaughtered innocent civilians at a fake airport. When the Onslaught were sent to attack the President of the United States, Amanda Waller learned of the plot and dispatched the Suicide Squad to deal with the group at their lair in Jotunheim.[1] Because his face is the only vulnerable part, Manticore was killed by Deadshot.[2]

He later returned as a member of the Black Lantern Corps in the Blackest Night tie-ins.[3]

Second Jihad member

The second character was unnamed and was a member of the second Onslaught team. He accompanied them in their attack on Manhattan.[4] During battle with the Suicide Squad, Manticore was killed by Lashina.[5]

Saied

Saied was the third Manticore and was a member of the fourth Onslaught team. He was romantically involved with Dervish.[6] During a fight with the Outsiders, Manticore was killed by Wylde.[7]

Saied later turned up alive where he is seen as a member of the Injustice League.[8]

During the "Salvation Run" storyline, Manticore is among the villains that are exiled to an alien planet.[9]

In "The New 52," a reboot of the DC Comics universe, Manticore appears as a member of Leviathan.[10]

Books of Magic version

The Manticore is a villain from the Books of Magic series released by DC Comics. He features prominently in the first few issues collected in the Bindings trade paperback, making a full debut in Books of Magic #2 (June 1994).

The character is based on the mythical creature Manticore, with the uncommon addition that he is also able to take the form of a human in posture as well as face. In Books of Magic the Manticore faces Timothy Hunter, a young boy he hopes to eat.

Global Guardian

Manticore is a member of the Global Guardians and the first hero to take this name.[11]

Fifth Manticore

A fifth Manticore appears in the "DC Rebirth" initiative as a member of the Burning World. This version resembles an armored humanoid manticore who was genetically altered by scientists.[12]

In the "Watchmen" sequel "Doomsday Clock", Manticore is listed as a member of the Iran superhero team called the Elite Basu.[13]

Powers and abilities

The Anastasio Corvo version of Manticore was genetically-engineered where he has super-strength, enhanced senses, enhanced agility, and enhanced durability. He wore a Manticore-like battle-suit where the claws shoot out at high velocity and the scorpion tail contains a grenade launcher.

The second Manticore has super-strength.

The fifth Manticore has super-strength, claws that can cut through anything, and can project himself into the form of a spirit tiger.
