Mannerwarlu

Mannervarlu native to state of Maharashtra, India. People of Munnervarlu are largely located in adjoining region of Maharashtra and Telangana border; mostly concentrated in Nanded district of Maharashtra. They speak Marathi and Telugu language but in slightly different dialect with frequent use of Hindi and Urdu words.

Large scale deforestation during and after reign of Nizam of Hyderabad and region's plain topography, hardly allowed Mannerwarlu tribe to protect its distinct culture and customs unlike the other tribes which got protection of either dense forest or hills. However they still worship their deity such as Pochamma,Yellama[1] Goddess. They also worship Pandavas. They celebrate festivals such as Nagpanchami ,Dasara and Diwali.

One of the old custom which is still followed by many is offering of Goat or Sheep to their Goddess at her temple which is the ancestral temple, situated inside the house of clan/family elder on the occasion of birth of Child, Wedding and other big events.

The main occupation of Mannerwarlu [2] was Hunting and Gathering forest products. Historically most men used to work as guide to Tiger hunting expeditions of British and Nizam of Hyderabad in colonial times and before that. Now most of them are farm less laborers, tenant farmers and marginal farmers. Those who live near whatever remained forest still gather and trade medicine plants, forest produce. Nevertheless most of men are migrating to West Maharashtra, Hyderabad in search of work and employment.And first generation of these tribe is now educated.And people from this community taking some post in Government sector.

Some of the community people surnames like pupulwad ,Bodhgire,Nallewad,Parodwad,Jethewad, Sathewad, Ungratwar, Thakarwad, Kantewad, Ambulgekar, Nainwad, Arsewad, Ramod , Abulkod,Kaslod raulwar shirsetwar shengulwar [3]

As all tribal history known through tribal elders, the information given by them suggest that they organised to fight Razakars[4], who were a private militia led by Qasim Razvi to support the rule of Nizam Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII and resist the integration of Hyderabad State into the Dominion of India.
