The Maltese Second Division (also known as the BOV Second Division due to sponsorship reasons) is the third-highest division in Maltese football, behind the Maltese First Division and above Maltese Third Division. The league has been running for many years.
It is contested by 13 teams and teams play each other twice. The top two teams are promoted to the second-highest Maltese division, the Maltese First Division, whilst the bottom two are relegated to the Maltese Third Division. The team which places third gets a second chance for promotion to the Maltese First Division by facing the third last-team team of the latter division whilst the team which ends in the antepenultimate position participates in a similar play-off against the third placed team of the Maltese Third Division.
