Malevolent is a 2018 horror film directed by Olaf de Fleur Johannesson and with a screenplay written by Ben Ketai and Eva Konstantopoulos. A team consisting of a brother and sister who are making money from faked paranormal encounters discovers during a job at a haunted house a case where they get less and less certain of what’s actually real.[1]

The film was released on October 5, 2018, by Netflix.[2]

Plot

Angela and Jackson run a scam on clients to convince them that they'd driven out spirits. Jackson, desperate for money to pay off a loan shark, agrees to quiet the screaming of the girls at the house. The girls, three nieces of Mrs. Green, were killed by her son Herman, their mouths sewn shut and placed in a circle.

After attempting to scam Mrs Green, she bluntly informs Jackson that they've failed. Angela sees a spirit of one of the girls and attempts to follow it into the disused East Wing, where the floor collapses, trapping Elliot, the cameraman. During this, Beth goes missing.

After escaping the hole, Jackson decides to leave after an uncomfortable conversation with Mrs. Green and finding Beth's necklace covered in blood. He eventually finds Beth unconscious, her mouth sewn shut. Attempting to drive away from the house with the others, Jackson runs over the groundskeeper, mistaking him for a spirit, and crashes the car, killing Beth. Herman, alive and hiding in the East Wing, collects Jackson as Elliot crawls from the accident. Mrs. Green, disappointed over Jackson's shyster act, cuts out his tongue and sews his mouth shut before ordering Herman to take him to the shed and kill him. During this, Herman captures Angela as well.

Elliot limps into the room as Mrs. Green begins to sew Angela's mouth shut. He manages to kill Herman with the groundskeeper's knife. As Mrs Green, enraged, attacks the weakened Elliot by hacking at him with a blade, the spirits of the dead girls appear. Angela pleads with them to help, and they begin to scream, distracting Mrs. Green long enough for Angela to free herself and kill Mrs. Green with a knife to the neck. Limping to the road to find help, Angela sees Jackson's ghost searching for Beth before wandering away. Angela collapses as passersby stop to help her.

The film ends in hospital where Angela and Elliot are being treated. On the phone to her grandfather, Angela tells him, "I'm not alone" as a dark shadow passes over her.
