Kamen Rider Hibiki (仮面ライダー響鬼（ヒビキ）, Kamen Raidā Hibiki, Masked Rider Hibiki) is a Japanese tokusatsu superhero television series, serving as the fifteenth installment in the popular Kamen Rider Series of tokusatsu programs. It is a joint collaboration between Ishimori Productions and Toei. Kamen Rider Hibiki first aired on January 30, 2005 and aired its final episode on January 22, 2006.

Synopsis

The Kamen Riders, known as Oni, battle man-eating beasts called Makamou with "pure sound". One of the Oni, a man named Hibiki, ends up having a "teacher-and-apprentice"-like relationship with Asumu Adachi. A young boy unsure of himself and is at a crossroads in his life as he transitions to high school, Asumu learns to be an adult through watching Hibiki and the other Oni as they all train together to hone their skills in fighting the Makamou and the homunculi aiding them. However, the sudden raise of Makamou numbers proves to be a prelude to an upcoming calamity.

Staff changes

Kamen Rider Hibiki began with Shigenori Takatera as the Toei producer, however, Shinichiro Shirakura, who though having participated in other Heisei Kamen Rider series, had no involvement whatsoever in the Hibiki production, was appointed producer of the film Kamen Rider Hibiki & the Seven Senki, eventually replacing Takatera in the TV production from episode 30. The writing staff also changed; Tsuyoshi Kida and Shinji Ōishi were replaced by Toshiki Inoue and Shōji Yonemura, who had worked with Shirakura in Sh15uya and other Heisei Kamen Rider series.

In addition, personalities such as Sensha Yoshida, a renowned manga artist; Hiroshi Yamamoto, a video-game designer; Masao Higashi, a seasoned television and movie critic; and many others published severe criticisms in their personal blogs because of this. Even the show's star, Shigeki Hosokawa, who portrayed Hibiki, stated in his personal website that Inoue’s scripts "needed adjustments" and that this whole staff change was "fraudulent". With the first production staff, Hosokawa would join the writers meetings and give suggestions, however Hosokawa could not give his opinion in the second production staff meetings due to time restraints.

In an interview published on TV Asahi's main website, Hosokawa stated that the script for the final episode was rewritten on the final day of filming. He later said that the script was sent in so late that it arrived on set as the final battle was being filmed. This finale was scrapped and then a new ending that, according to Hosokawa, was nothing like the intended ending, was filmed. Later in the interview, Hosokawa said that the Oni suit used by Kiriya was a kitbash of two new suits made especially for the characters of Asumu and Kiriya. Hosokawa said that this was the most upsetting change to him as the final script had been rewritten six times at that point and all but the filmed version contained both Asumu and Kiriya becoming Oni.

In January 2006, at the Kamen Rider Super Live, Hosokawa stated that the series was "essentially an incomplete process" and that "it should not have ended that way". Mitsu Murata, who portrayed the Douji characters, declared on his blog: "I cannot forgive them, I want to continue his idea", complaining about the removal of Takatera as producer. These declarations caused an unprecedented storm within the professional tokusatsu market and many of Toei's executives were berated for allowing a series to be handled in such a manner.

There has never been any official statement from Toei, but many critics point out several facts might have caused it, the main reason being the low toy sales. It is not usual for a Toei production to have two different producers for the TV series and the movie. It is likely that a different producer was appointed for the movie because Toei was suffering from schedule problems with Takatera.

Changes

  • Asumu's opening narration at the start of every episode was removed starting with episode 30.
  • A new opening was introduced in episode 34 and following.
  • The use of kanji being flashed on screen during scenes was removed altogether by episode 30.
  • The ending sequence was removed altogether.
  • The characters of Kyosuke Kiriya and Shuki were introduced to the series.
  • Originally Eiki and Shouki were both supposed to be main cast members, but had their parts completely removed.
  • The fire breathing (Onibi) and the Oni claws (Onizume) abilities' sequences were completely removed along with Ibuki opening his mouth for his attack. The Makamou that opened their mouths too wide or spurted liquids were also removed. There had been complaints about these sequences from parent advocacy groups who claimed that they scared children.
  • Things as complicated-to-animate CG Makamou and shooting in mountains were almost entirely reduced probably due to cost issues, leading critics to believe that Takatera was forcefully removed from the project due to his unwillingness to change his script to adapt to these changes.

Oni Kamen Rider

The combatant agents of Takeshi are known as Oni. They have been around for hundreds of years, protecting humans and fighting against the Makamou. The title of every Oni bears the -ki suffix (鬼), which is semantically identical to "Oni" in Japanese. It also has some resemblance with the real name of the Oni. Among making many changes to the Kamen Rider look, Kamen Rider Hibiki introduced Kamen Rider Shuki, the third officially recognized female Heisei Kamen Rider in a Kamen Rider series after Kamen Rider Femme from Ryuki and Kamen Rider Larc from Blade.

Makamou

The regular antagonists of the series; an assortment of monstrous creatures that usually dwell in the rural areas and consume human beings as food.

Takeshi Gear

Takeshi is the name of the group that works with the Oni Kamen Riders. They create many items for use in battle, from weapons to Disc Animals.

Novel

A set of six novels published under the title Kamen Rider Hibiki: Compass to Tomorrow (仮面ライダー響鬼 明日への指針（コンパス）, Kamen Raidā Hibiki Asu e no Konpasu) was released shortly after the end of the series. The novels followed relatively the same plot as the TV series but added new characters and enemies towards the end of its run.

Video game

Kamen Rider Hibiki was released by Bandai for the PlayStation 2 on December 1, 2005. It featured a unique cross compatibility with the Taiko no Tatsujin Tatacon controller, where the taiko-like controller could be used in the rhythm game-like sections of Hibiki. It was also released alongside a special edition of the Taiko no Tatsujin series which included the theme songs of the Kamen Rider Hibiki TV show ("Kagayaki" and "Shōnen yo"). A release for the Nintendo GameCube was planned, but ultimately scrapped.[1][2]

Asumu Adachi and his mother went to Yaku Island for a family reunion. During the boat ride to the island, Asumu meets a man named Hibiki, who has just saved a child from going overboard. On Yaku Island, people are disappearing in the forests and Hibiki goes in to investigate. In the forest, Asumu and his cousin meet Hibiki and also run into a pair of demons known as Douji and Hime of the Makamou. Hibiki goes to fight the Makamou and transforms into an armored figure called an Oni. After destroying one of the two Makamou, the Douji, Hibiki is seen fighting the Makamou by Asumu.

Hibiki spends the night at the memorial where Asumu is staying. The next day Asumu meets Hibiki out by the beach and they both talk about what Hibiki does for a living. Asumu witnesses Hibiki transform into the Oni to fight the Hime and her child, a demon-spider called Tsuchigumo. After the fight, Asumu begins to take a liking to Hibiki.

Both Adachi and Hibiki return to Tokyo where Hibiki is sent off to defeat a Yamabiko sighted at Okutama. Later on, Hibiki meets Asumu's mother, who is ecstatic to see him. The strain of studying for entrance exams begins to trouble Asumu as he worries about Hibiki and how safe he is with the type of job he has.

Asumu trails an old man whom he believes has connections to Hibiki after he sees him save a young girl. Elsewhere, Hibiki continues his battle with the Makamou who had been killing people in the forest. After the battle, Hibiki and Kasumi return to Tachibana's sweet shop, where the Asumu and the old man are.
5"Melting Sea"

Hibiki and Asumu have a talk about the school that Asumu wants to go to. At school, Asumu is told by a teacher that if he fails his entrance test to Jounan, he will have no second chance so he must not fail. Hibiki is then told of a Makamou, called Bakegani, that has been attacking ships and defeated a fellow Oni, Zanki. He goes to fight the Hime, but was overcome by the Bakegani and is forced into the sea.

Ibuki, thinking Asumu is Hibiki's student, takes Asumu to where Hibiki and Kasumi are located. Hibiki then returns to battle the Bakegani that defeated him previously.

An irritated Akira tells Asumu that he will only hinder Hibiki if he continues following him around and that it would be best for him to leave. Asumu returns home after spending a week hospitalized and begins his recuperation. Elsewhere, Zanki reveals that he will soon be retiring and expects his apprentice Todoyama to take his place, a revelation that Todoyama is less than pleased with. Even more, they are called to aid Sabaki at Tsukama Village, where a Yamaarashi is running rampant.

Zanki and Todoyama come to Sabaki's rescue after being captured by the Yamaarashi. Zanki begins to weaken and proves unable to defeat the Yamaarashi. Todoyama takes Zanki's place and destroys his first giant type Makamou. As Zanki retires, Todoyama refuses to take his name, instead wanting to make a name for himself, Zanki dubs him Todoroki, the roaring Oni.
17"A Targeted Town"

Kasumi and Ibuki go clothes-shopping on their day-off. After shopping and during their meal, Ibuki sees a Douji and Hime pair in the city and begins his pursuit. Elsewhere, Hitomi is having mixed feelings about Asumu and Akira spending so much time together. After defeating the Douji-Hime pair, Ibuki is attacked by an Oonamazu stomach. After its retreat, Ibuki calls Akira and asks her to bring his Reppu.
18"Unbroken Hurricane"

Akira makes her way towards the ever-changing location of the Oonamazu. Asumu then heads to Tachibana's and ends up helping Hinaka deal with the influx of customers. Later, Ibuki once again takes on the Oonamazu stomach, only to be severely burned by its stomach acids. As she heads towards the battle, a puppet-type Makamou causes Akira to collapse under a bridge. Ibuki then proceeds to fight the Oonamazu for the final time.

Asumu begins his first day at Tachibana's Sweets Shop and discovers that Todoroki and Hitomi are related. Todoroki continues to fight the Bakegani as Kasumi notices something is wrong with him. Despite running out of time, Zanki still goes on to fight the Makamou. Todoroki, bringing his still injured self in the battlefield, fights alongside his master in Zanki's final battle. After the cleansing, Zanki declared Todoroki's independent status as an Oni and disappears forever, leaving behind his brace and guitar.

A year has passed since the sealing of the Orochi and all the Oni have survived the great battle. Asumu and Hibki have become estranged as Asumu graduates and becomes an assistant at a local hospital. When a child is thrown over a cliff, Asumu rushes to his rescue and soon calls Kiriya for help. After the ordeal, the two discuss the changes in their life and are soon attacked by a new type of Makamou. Kiriya is knocked out and Asumu tends to his wounds, though soon Kiriya transforms into his own Oni form to fight off the Makamou, the two then learn Mochida has been kidnapped and go to her rescue. After saving her, the group is attacked by the same Makamou from before and Kiriyam transforms to fight it before being knocked out just as Ibuki and Todoroki arrive. Hibiki arrives before long and defeats the Makamou as a new massive worm type appears. Asumu is knocked out by the Makamou and upon awakening, shares a discussion with Hibiki on a cliff overlooking the ocean in a scene reminiscent of their first deep discussion two years ago on Yaku island.

Hyper Battle DVD

In Kamen Rider Hibiki: Asumu Henshin! You Can Be an Oni, too!! (仮面ライダー響鬼 明日夢変身！キミも鬼になれる！！, Kamen Raidā Hibiki: Kimi mo Oni ni Nareru!!), Asumu Adachi imagines if he could be like Kamen Rider Hibiki, and are approached by talking Disc Animals who teach him how to be like Hibiki, eventually allowing Asumu to transform into Kamen Rider Armed Hibiki. Kamen Rider Sabaki also appears in the DVD.

Kamen Rider Hibiki & The Seven Senki

The movie spin-off of the 2005 Kamen Rider series, entitled Kamen Rider Hibiki & The Seven Senki the Movie (劇場版 仮面ライダー響鬼と7人の戦鬼, Gekijōban Kamen Raidā Hibiki to Shichinin no Senki) takes place in the Warring States Period. The film serves as a prequel to the Makamou war and features five movie-only Oni known as Kabuki, Kirameki, Habataki, Nishiki, and Touki.

Seven Ogres

The S.I.C. Hero Saga side story for Hibiki is titled Masked Rider Hibiki: Seven Ogres (MASKED RIDER HIBIKI -SEVEN OGRES-, Kamen Raidā Hibiki: Sebun Ōgazu), which is an alternate telling of the film Hibiki & The Seven Senki. It features the original character Kamen Rider Armed Hibiki (Sengoku Period ver.) (仮面ライダー装甲響鬼（戦国時代ver.）, Kamen Raidā Āmudo Hibiki (Sengoku Jidai ver.)). The Seven Ogres storyline ran in the June through September 2006 issues of Monthly Hobby Japan magazine.
