MV Red Kestrel is a vehicle and passenger ferry being built by Cammel Laird for Red Funnel for use on their route from Southampton to East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. She is expected to be completed in Spring 2019 and see service later in the year.[2]

History

Red Funnel's £10 million order for the new ship was announced in 14 February 2018. Her construction will mean that those traveling to and from the Isle of Wight will have more space on board their selected crossing with the removal of freight lorries. The ferry will provide 265 lane metres of roll-on/roll-off freight capacity and up to 12 passengers.[3]

The keel for MV Red Kestrel was laid down on 31 May 2018 at Cammel Laird in Birkenhead in a ceremony attended by 300 guests.[1] In tradition and for good luck, a silver sixpence from 1811 and a halfpenny from 1792 were placed under the keelblock. The coins will be recovered and presented to the vessel when she enters service.
