Māui (mythology)

Māui (Maui) is the great culture hero and trickster in Polynesian mythology.

Stories about his exploits are told in nearly every Polynesian land. He fishes up the North Island from the sea, slows down the sun, and even tamed fire. While Maui in most cases is regarded as a god or fully divine figure, in some places he is regarded as merely human.[1]

Māui appears as a demigod and a primary character in the 2016 Disney film Moana.
