Lynn Richardson is an American financial expert, author, professional speaker, and television personality known for The W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience, the Hip Hop Summit Action Network, and the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation.

Career

Richardson began her career as a financial aid counselor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 followed by Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Moraine Valley Community College in 1997.[1] She then began serving as Assistant Vice President with American Home Mortgage in 2003 and as Vice President at JPMorgan Chase in 2008.[2]

Richardson has served as a financial contributor for Essence magazine[3][4][5] and MadameNoire magazine,[6][7] Global Grind, and RushCard.[8] She has appeared as a guest speaker on multiple television shows, including The Steve Harvey Show,[9] Good Day L.A.,[10] and Let's Talk Live,[11] and on multiple radio shows, including The Tom Joyner Morning Show,[12] Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell,[13] and The Al Rucker Show[14]. She has been featured in The Baltimore Sun,[15] The Chicago Defender,[16] Rolling Out,[17] The Daily Press,[18] St. Louis Argus,[19], Jet magazine[20] and by BET.[21] She has also appeared as a spokesperson on BET,[22] including Jackson Hewitt Tax Tips,[23] Cricket Wireless Money Saving Tips,[24][25] and Nationwide Big Tips for Small Business[26][27]. She also hosted the radio show Wealth 'n Real Estate on WVON-AM in Chicago.[28]

Financial coaching

In 2008, Richardson began serving as National Home Ownership Advisory Council Chair and Chief Operations Executive of Russell Simmons' and Benjamin Chavis' Hip Hop Summit Action Network, an organization whose mission is to unite artists, executives, and advocates against poverty and economic injustice.[29][30][31] She served as financial mentor to several of Russell Simmons’ entities and initiatives, including RushCard, Global Grind, Hip Hop Summit Action Network, Get Your Money Right,[32] and Get Your House Right[33]. Her professional relationship with rapper, author, and philanthropist MC Lyte further developed into a philanthropy partnership. MC Lyte is cited as saying:

"Not only has my co-host, sister, business partner, and friend Lynn Richardson helped me transform my business and build my financial empire faster than the speed of light, but she planted generational seeds that transformed my life."[34]

In 2012, Richardson also began serving as the COO of MC Lyte's company Sunni Gyrl Inc., which provides artist management, support, development, business strategies, and wealth creation for notable people.[35]

In 2016, Richardson launched The W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience, a three-day annual retreat, in partnership with MC Lyte, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, Erica Campbell, and Nicci Gilbert.[36][37][38] W.E.A.L.T.H. is an acronym for Womanhood, Expansion, Assets, Leadership, Transformation, and Health.[39] She serves as executive producer of and keynote speaker for the event.

Public speaking

In 2008, Richardson created and undertook the HBCU Health, Wealth 'n Real Estate tour in partnership with State Farm and Ian Smith's 50 Million Pound Challenge. The tour included Howard University, Hampton University, and Clark-Atlanta University. It intended to provide students with financial literacy, tools to safeguard against bad credit and debt, and the low post-collegiate net worth that affects many African American graduates.[40][41][42]

Richardson has served as a keynote speaker on multiple panels, including the Circle of Sisters Expo with Prudential Financial in 2012,[43] the Women, Wealth, and Relationships event at Texas Southern University in 2013,[44] the BET Experience with Creme of Nature and Soul Train Awards with Creme of Nature in 2014,[45] BET Experience with Ameriprise Financial in 2015,[46] and the National Urban League Convention in 2016.[47]

In April 2018, Richardson was a keynote speaker at The Sistahs in Business Expo (SIBEXPO) in Newark, New Jersey, along with MC Lyte.[48][49] The expo's CEO and founder, Aisha Taylor Issah, is cited as saying of the pair:

“We couldn’t be more honored to have M.C. Lyte and Dr. Lynn Richardson as the keynote speakers for our launch event in Newark. They both exemplify the mission of our expo as entrepreneurial women of color who have blazed the trail for so many others.”[50]

She was announced as a speaker at the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference which takes place in June 2018.[51]

Philanthropy

In 2012, Richardson co-founded Hip Hop Sisters Foundation with MC Lyte, for which she nows serves as the President and CEO. The foundation has awarded over $750,000 in college scholarships to young men and women.[52][53][54]
