BBC

First months

Hockings joined the BBC as a producer in 1999, before being promoted to senior producer in 2000.

Reporter

As a reporter, Hockings has covered the September 11 attacks, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the 2004 tsunami, the death of Pope John Paul II, the 2005 London bombings, and the capture of Saddam Hussein.[2][3]

Accent

During her earlier presenting days, Hockings' employers made attempts to "iron out" her vowels, and some viewers were annoyed at "that young Australian girl reading the news". Hockings said that when she started, "the accent was a huge problem and I was sent to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for speech lessons. They were unsuccessful. My accent is part of who I am and I work for an international broadcaster—it's a good reflection of the newsroom, which is very international."[4]
