Loyola Technical Institute, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, was founded by the Jesuits in 1952, in the Catholic Archdiocese of Madurai.[3]

History

Loyola Technical Institute is a part of the Jesuit’s Madurai Province, which dates back to the time of St. Francis Xavier, S.J., who began work in the region in 1542. In 1606 the Jesuit Robert de Nobili chose this area to found the Madura(i) Mission because of it was a cultural and literary center from the time of the Pandyan dynasty. After the late 18th century suppression of the Jesuits, the French Jesuits took over work in the Madurai Mission, which became an independent, Jesuit Province in 1952, the founding year of Loyola Technical Institute.[4][5]

Activities

Loyola is a study center of Indira Gandhi National Open University.[6] Among Loyola's programs is a craftsman training scheme.[7] In conjunction with Loyola the Jesuits run Loyola Community College which accommodates 100 students and prepares them for gainful employment, in jobs like like automotive repair, computer hardware, and HVAC, in affiliation with Tamil Nadu Open University.[8]

Loyola organized "English Fest - 2007", a 10-day festival organised to inspire and motivate students to speak, read, and write in English.[9]

Loyola Education Network for Social Communications screened the Tamil film Nisabdham and discussion on how parents might handle sexual abuse of their child.[10]

The school has Loyola I.T.I. Alumni Association, a member of the Jesuit Alumni Associations of India.[11]
