Ljungby library, or Ljungby kommunbibliotek (Swedish: Ljungby Municipal Library), is visited daily by between 500 and 800 patrons and has a surface area of 3,030 square metres (32,600 sq ft). The building also includes Ljungby municipal art gallery and a café.[2]

Creation and renovation

In the beginning of the 20th century there were several libraries in Ljungby. One of the first opened 1920 on Storgatan (one of the main streets) in the middle of Ljungby. With a grant from the government of 218 kronor and 94 öre, the library bought 36 new books the following year. The total collection then consisted of 78 books.[3]

The current library finished construction in 1982 and was designed by architect Jan Wallinder.[4] Librarian Ingemar Ehlin at Uppsala library considered it as one of the most interesting contemporary libraries due to its innovative architecture and functionality.[5]

The library was temporarily closed in September 2009 for renovation. It opened again after three months on January 11, 2010.[6]

Branches

Ljungby library has branches in Lagan,[7] Ryssby[8] and Lidhult.[9] There is also a mobile library[10] that visits various stops around Ljungby Municipality.
