Tully is a surname of Irish origin. The surname itself and its variants include; Tally, MacTully, Tilly and Flood, all of which can derive from several different unrelated Irish families such as; Ó Maoltuile, Taithligh, Mac Maoltuile, Ó Taithligh, and Mac an Tuile. "That name belongs to Tyronne and Fermanagh and appears to have no connection at al with Clare. Ó Taithligh is anglicized as Tally, Tilly and Tully. Tully it is true, is found in Galway, the county nearest to Clare, but there is always an abbreviated form of MacAtilla (see Irish Families, pp 278-279)
