More are under construction, to be added to the navy, in the Persian Gulf.

These guided missile frigates are designed to carry a Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter, or two Bell-Agusta 212 helicopters. One of them (Sahand) is being fitted-up with armament and avionics/electronics, and will be in service in 2013. There are more planned for construction.

Paykan was sunk during Operation Morvarid by the Iraqi Navy, in 1980, while Joshan was sunk by the American Navy, during Operation Praying Mantis, in 1988. These ships must not be confused with the new Joshan and Paykan, which are part of the Iranian Navy fleet of warships serving in the Caspian Sea.
