A US citizen, born in Ithaca NY, Fairbanks crossed the border to join the RCAF in February, 1941, at Hamilton, Ontario, graduating from pilot training and initially becoming a flight instructor. Posted overseas to England in 1943 he flew Spitfire Mk. V's initially, later having great success with the Hawker Tempest. Flying only with RAF squadrons throughout, he was promoted to Squadron Leader and appointed Officer Commanding, 274 Squadron RAF, until February 1945 when he was shot down and captured. 'Fubar' was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in January 1945, followed later by two bars to his DFC. Amongst his 15 recorded enemy kills, Fairbanks was the first allied pilot to shoot down an Arado 234 jet bomber/recconaissance aircraft: "Whilst flying with other Hawker Tempests of 274 Sqn on 11th February 1945, Sqn Ldr David Fairbanks spotted a lone Arado Ar234 of the Kommando Sperling 1 (F) / 123 flown by Hauptmann Hans Felde returning to its base at Rheine. A desperate chase commenced through the cloudbase until the German jet prepared to land, whereupon Fairbanks sent 4U+DH down in flames after a single short burst of his four 20mm cannon". Following the war he eventually joined De Havilland aircraft of Canada as a test pilot, took out Canadian citizenship and became DHC Manager of Flight Operations until his death from natural causes on February 20, 1975.
