Responding to an early morning call reporting a family dispute, Officer Jim Street and his partner fall prey to an ambush by three gunmen. It is just one in a series of ambushes which have plagued the police. In the aftermath of the shooting Street's partner is dead, and Jim tries out for an opening in a newly formed S.W.A.T. unit being headed by Sgt. "Hondo" Harrelson. The team's first assignment is to find and stop the gunmen who have declared war on the city's police. | |||||

A prisoner (played by Sal Mineo) is broken out of the prison ward of County General Hospital. His name is Joey Hopper, and his followers are called the Hopper Family; they consist of alienated youths who view Hopper as their spiritual leader. All escape routes out of the city have been closed, and S.W.A.T.'s job is to conduct a sweep of the city and find them. Hopper's goal is to exact revenge against all those who prosecuted him... including "Hondo" Harrelson. | |||||

Frank Thomas is the third victim of a sniper shooting in the last year. S.W.A.T. begins investigating by looking for a common link between the victims. They discover that two of the men dated the same woman, Janet Warren. Harrelson's plan puts Jim Street undercover as her new boyfriend in an attempt to draw out the sniper. | |||||

Meredith Cooper is a freelance writer sent by the PR department to do a piece on S.W.A.T. for a magazine. She is anti-police and thinks they are a necessary evil but more evil than necessary. Harrelson and the team are told to cooperate and give her what she wants; human interest stories. While she is with them they respond to an APB on a missing girl who may have been kidnapped. | |||||

Vincent Ritchie is a drug dealer who has agreed to testify against his former associates. While being escorted into town there is an ambush, and during the gunfight he is shot and severely wounded. Notes
The opening sequence of the second-season episode "Terror Ship" re-used footage from the beginning of the first-season episode "Pressure Cooker," and the second-season episode "Deadly Weapons" similarly used re-edited footage taken from the first-season finale, "Sole Survivor."
