Season chronology

Pokémon: Master Quest is the fifth season of Pokémon, a Japanese anime television series known in Japan as Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā). It originally aired in Japan from August 2001 to November 2002 on TV Tokyo and in the United States from September 2002 to October 2003 on The WB. It was the first season of Pokémon to be digitally animated as opposed to cel animation, starting with the episode "Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid".

The season follows the adventures of the ten-year-old Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum (voiced in English by Veronica Taylor and in Japanese by Rica Matsumoto) and his electric mouse partner Pikachu (voiced by Ikue Ōtani) as they collect Gym Badges in the fictional Johto region so they can compete in the Johto League competition.

The episodes were directed by Masamitsu Hidaka and produced by the animation studio OLM.

The Japanese opening songs are "Aim to be a Pokemon Master" by Whiteberry, and "Ready Go!" by Naomi Tamura. The ending songs are "Face Forward Team Rocket" by Team Rocket trio, and "Pocket-ering Monster-ing" by Kana. The English opening song is "Believe in Me" by David Rolfe.

Overview

The division between seasons of Pokémon is based on the English version openings of each episode, and may not reflect the actual production season. The English episode numbers are based on their first airing in the United States either in syndication, on The WB Television Network or on Cartoon Network. (Other English-speaking nations largely followed either this order or the Japanese order). Subsequent airings of the English version follow the original Japanese order, except in the case of episodes which are no longer shown in English.

While Master Quest consists of 64 episodes (not including the banned episode "The Ice Cave!"), the first 52 episodes are part of the fifth production season while the final 12 episodes are part of the sixth production season, starting with "Address Unown". This gives Master Quest, along with Indigo League and Adventures on the Orange Islands the distinction of airing during two different production seasons.

This season aired first-run episodes in Japan from August 9, 2001 to November 14, 2002. In the United States, it aired from September 14, 2002 to October 25, 2003. It originally aired as part of the 2002-2003 Kids' WB! weekday afternoon line-up and Saturday morning line-up.

In the United States, two three-disc DVD sets were released by Viz Video and Pioneer,[1][2] but these DVDs are now out of print. Viz Media released Pokémon: Master Quest – The Complete Collection on DVD in the United States on October 11, 2016.
