Yato has sadly gotten very little recognition for his work on destroying phantoms. Kazuma continues training Yukine. Yato surprises Hiyori with a date idea to Capypaland, a place she is horrified to revisit, due to memories of going there with Koto, and reluctantly goes along. She apologizes to Yato over not being excited but says she wants to spend time with him. Hiyori notices that Daikoku is really attached to children, and Kofuku tells her about how she too noticed and adopted a young shinki named Deigo. However, due to Deigo not understanding his situation and the pain of Daikoku having to lie to him, Daikoku suffered and Kofuku made the difficult decision to excommunicate Deigo. This caused Daikoku to blight, and hearing of Yato's tie-severing power, he approached him for help. Yato reveals to Hiyori that they lied about him severing Daikoku's ties to Diego: the two overcame the pain of losing Deigo with each other. Tenzin asks Yato to fulfill a request for him. A woman wishes to return her bracelet to the original owner. At the old woman's house, her negative feelings are causing phantoms to appear. It is revealed the bracelet came from the woman's mother, who, during World War 2, told her to live and pushed her into a river. The woman visits Tenjin's shrine to pay tribute, and meets Yato's previous regalia, Mayu, whom she addresses as mother. Hiyori is shocked by this but Tsuyu informs her not to say anything.

Tsuyu informs Hiyori that when a God takes on a Regalia, he gains their memories and is to never reveal anything about their shinki's past life. That is the "God's Secret." A little boy enters the room where Kugaha is being held. A phantom pops out of the boy but is slain. Tenjin and Tsuyu realize that the phantom was sent there to kill Kugaha so he doesn't talk. They also realize that someone can put phantoms inside people in order to cross borders. Yato sees Koto, realizing that he is the current form of his "Father." Koto reveals that he is a deity that possesses human beings and his current host is Koto. Koto reveals a photo of the date he went on with Hiyori. Yato is horrified by this, and confronts Hiyori, telling her to stay away. Nora attacks Yukine but Yukine counters and Nora has to escape. Koto tells Nora not to hurt Yukine, because Yukine will belong to him someday. Bishamon and Kazuma learn about Yato having a father and are shocked. who had no idea that Yato has a father. Hiyori eavesdrops on Yato confessing to Yukine that he can't kill his father because he fears that killing him will result in Yato disappearing. Yato later takes a nap and Hiyori sits by him. She starts seeing Yato's memories. It is revealed that hundreds of years ago, Yato, then known as Yaboku, was raised by his father to be a killer. He was given Nora, revealed to be named Hiiro, and told to cull the population. Yaboku one day encounters a shinki, who was just released from Tenjin, that asks to be his Regalia. Yaboku sees she is blighted and helps purify her body. She asks for his name and, upon seeing how it is written, misinterprets it as "Yato." Yaboku names her Sakura, but is horrified upon gaining her memories, due to this not happening with Hiiro, and leaves her. Yato begins feeling pain and finds out that whenever his Regalia is in pain, he is too. He apologizes to Sakura and the two bond. But she is horrified upon being used to kill a man and leaves him. Tsuyu admits to Sakura that Tenjin was the same in the past, but she didn't give up on him, and neither should Sakura. Sakura returns and mentors Yato. Yato's father realizes Yato has not been killing as much and Hiiro confronts Yato, revealing that she has been getting beat by their father. Hiiro tells Yato Sakura's true name. However upon Yato revealing it, she blights and turns into a phantom. Hiyori realizes that when a Regalia is told the name they had when they were alive, they cannot not be saved.
