List of Ireland ODI cricketers

Gary Wilson, who has kept wicket for Ireland in ODIs, keeping wicket against Essex.

Since their first match in 2006, 52 players have represented Ireland in One Day Internationals (ODIs).[1] A One Day International is an international cricket match between two representative teams, each having ODI status, as determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC). An ODI differs from Test matches in that the number of overs per team is limited, and that each team has only one innings. Where more than one player won his first ODI cap in the same match, those players are listed alphabetically by surname.

Ireland have played 139 ODIs, resulting in 61 victories, 68 defeats, 7 no results, and 3 ties.[2] Ireland played their maiden ODI on 13 June 2006 against England.[3] Ireland lost by 38 runs, although the match drew interest and was played in front a full capacity crowd at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast.[4] By reaching the final of the 2005 ICC Trophy,[5] Ireland qualified for the 2007 World Cup, where they progressed to the super eights by beating Pakistan and made a tie against Zimbabwe  In the second round-robin stage of the tournament  managed victory against Bangladesh. Ireland's performance, which took pundits by surprise, propelled them to 10th place in the ICC ODI rankings, ahead of Zimbabwe and Kenya.[6][7] Ireland is one of two associate nations to be part of the rankings; associates are the next level of team below those that play Test cricket.[6]

Irish cricket has experienced a migration of some of its players to the English county cricket system, where teams representing 18 of the traditional counties of England compete. Players such as Ed Joyce  who has played ODI cricket for England  have left Ireland to take up cricket as a profession in England, something that is not possible in Ireland as there is no professional infrastructure. On occasion, some of Ireland's players  notably captain William Porterfield (Gloucestershire), batsman Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien (Northamptonshire), and bowler Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire)  have been unavailable to play due to commitments to their county side, weakening the national side. Some players, such as Morgan, went on to qualify for England.[8] Ireland, having won a hat-trick of ICC Intercontinental Cup titles since 2005,[9] have been labelled the "leading associate".[10]

Jeremy Bray scored Ireland's first ODI century on 30 January 2007 in a match against Scotland. Bray later scored Ireland's maiden World Cup century when he struck 115 not out against Zimbabwe on 15 March 2007. The highest score in ODIs for Ireland is 177, scored by Paul Stirling against Canada on 7 September 2010.[11] The record for best bowling figures in an innings for Ireland in ODIs also belongs to Paul Stirling, who took 6/55 against Afghanistan on 17 March 2017.[12] William Porterfield is Ireland's leading run scorer with 3,722 runs and Kevin O'Brien is the country's leading wicket-taker with 112 wickets.

Captains

In 2006 all-rounder Trent Johnston became Ireland's first ODI captain.[3] He stepped down as captain in early 2008 and took a break from cricket as he was struggling with injury problems.[69] William Porterfield succeeded Johnston as Ireland's full-time captain in April 2008.[70] On occasions when Porterfield has been unavailable, sometimes due to commitments with his county side, Kyle McCallan and Kevin O'Brien have filled the role of captain.[71]
