List of ''Hanebado!'' episodes

Hanebado! is an anime series adapted from the manga of the same title by Kōsuke Hamada. It aired from July 2[lower-alpha 1] to October 1, 2018, on Tokyo MX and other channels,[1] It ran for 13 episodes in 6 DVD/Blu-ray releases.[2] The series is directed by Shinpei Ezaki and written by Taku Kishimoto, with animation by Liden Films. Satoshi Kimura provided the character designs, and Tatsuya Kato composed the music. The opening theme is "Futari no Hane" (ふたりの羽根) by Yurika, and the ending theme is "High Stepper" (ハイステッパー, Hai Suteppā) by Yuiko Ōhara.[3] Due to the 2018 Hokkaido earthquake, the last three episodes were delayed by a week.[4][5]

The series is simulcast worldwide outside Asia by Crunchyroll with English subtitles, and in North America, the British Isles and Australasia by Funimation with an English dub.[6]

Nagisa Aragaki is facing Ayano Hanesaki at the Junior Nationals badminton tournament and loses in a blowout. She has been depressed since that loss and, as captain of the badminton club, takes out her frustration on new potential club members, while Riko Izumi, the vice-captain of the badminton club, tries to tell the new members not to quit. At the start of a new school year, Noriko Miyura overhears Ayano and Elena Fujisawa wanting to join a school club. Noriko advises against the badminton club, and promotes the tennis club instead. Later, Riko sees Ayano while walking home, but in disbelief decides she has mistaken someone else for her. The next day, Kentarō Tachibana is scouting for badminton members while watching a practice match at the tennis club. A powerful serve goes out of bounds and heads straight for Elena, which Ayano deflects with ease. Kentarō notices this and approaches Ayano boldly, while Elena accuses Kentarō of being a pervert and protects her. Nagisa also sees Ayano, much to her disbelief. Later, Miyako Tarōmaru, the badminton club's advisor, introduces Kentarō as the new coach for the badminton club. Erena drags Ayano to the badminton club in an attempt to get her to join.

Nagisa and Ayano had a sparring as Miyako watches from afar. Kentarō advises Nagisa and Ayano to practice, but Ayano dissent that. As Nagisa got paired with Riko instead. Kentarō and Gaku Isehara has a practice match with Nagisa and Ayano in pairs, but working as a team seems harder. Then Kentarō switches Nagisa out with Riko and the match went better by relying on others, which Nagisa was lacking on. By a convenience store Yu Ebina, another badminton club member stops to eat a corn dog, she saw Nagisa walks by and offers to eat together. While eating the corn dog, Nagisa snaps at Yu for commenting about getting better at serving, as one of the pass members that quit the club earlier, Yuka, confronted her that she is jealous of her of being tall. At the end of practice Kentarō challenges Nagisa to a mock match. During the match, he concludes that Nagisa doesn't have that passion in badminton; to have fun playing it. Since being "tall" was on her mind.

In a flashback, Uchika Hanesaki, Ayano's mom is practicing with her as Elena watches and counts how many returns Ayano had. In middle school Ayano quits badminton around the time, when Uchika left her behind. At the end of school, Noriko startles Ayano and Erena about having a date to the movie theater. But the date is canceled. At practice Miyako and Kentarō, thinks Nagisa isn't depressed now. Erena goes to see a movie with Noriko and has tea, then she leaves as Elena saw Nagisa running and talks with her. During practice, a girl challenges Ayano to a friendly match, who she knows as Kaoruko Serigaya and she lost. Later Kentarō and Nagisa tries to visit Ayano. When Cho and Masashi, her grandparents greeted them instead. Kentarō sees Uchika's medals and trophies. The grandparents told that Uchika was a badminton champion, before retiring and cared for her. With Ayano depressed, she is at a playground. Until Erena shows up and wants to know who was that girl. Ayano says, back in middle school Kaoruko got her sick with a cold. Before an important badminton match, which disappointed Uchika and left. Erena asks Nagisa for help, to cheer up Ayano. Nagisa meets her and plays badminton at the playground. The next day Ayano and Erena formally joins the badminton club.

With the badminton training camp beginning, the club is greeted by the Fredericia girls badminton club's captain Yuika Shiwahime. Kentarō comes up with a strategy for single and double matches, while Ayano elected to go to a convenience store. She reads a drawn map by Nagisa and is approached by a girl wearing shades, who's going to the same store. The rest of the Fredericia members wonder where is their last member at. As they get to the store, the girl asks what high school she's in and starts questioning her. When Sora Isehara, the younger sister to Gaku, found them. Both of them got back to the training camp. As the other badminton matches ended. Conny shows up late to the camp, worrying Hina Tagajo, her teammate for the match with Ayano and Riko. Who they are facing. Before the match starts, Conny told Hina to sit out. Until the match looks one-sided with Hina returning the serves and Conny not assisting her. She decides to play for serious by herself. Kentarō looks back at his clipboard and says her name is Conny Christensen. And she ties a knot around her hair, the same way Ayano's mother did.
5"You're Not Alone"

The match continues and Conny laments that Ayano isn't like Uchika. Much to Ayano's surprise. During the short interval Kentarō uses a strategy. For Riko to cover the front and Ayano, the back-court. The strategy was working, until Conny got tired out and Hina returned the serve for the match point. When Ayano tried to return the serve, the string to her racket broke. With a close lost. Ayano told to the rest of her badminton club, if my racket didn't have broken, we would have won. As she runs away feeling depressed. Later, Yu found Ayano and tries to cheer her up. When Sora wanted to criticize her about the earlier match, but she admires how it went. Conny also feels depressed, but is cheered up by Yuika and the rest of her club members at the inn. At night, Ayano tried to ask Conny about Uchika. But got scared, when she and some of their club members are going back to their room. Before leaving the training camp Ayano asks Conny, how is mother doing. In which she says Uchika is returning back to Japan later. Elena asks Ayano how the meeting went, as Ayano replying "Forget mom, I don't need her anymore."

Miyako wants the badminton club to have new uniforms, as Nagisa doesn't think they should, while Riko does. Since Ayano joined the badminton club, it has changed the club's image. During practice Yu notices both Nagisa and Riko have changed. Elena saw Ayano staring at the whiteboard thinking about what Conny said, asking "Are you ok?" For the next preliminary badminton tournament, everyone has gotten the information on, who will they face. Yu asks whose Riko opponent is, and her name is Nozomi Ishizawa, an old middle school friend. Who was a semifinalist from last year's badminton tournament. Nagisa wonders how Riko will win and she yells at Nagisa for not being like her. At the start of the high school single's badminton tournament, Miyako unexpectedly hands out the new uniforms. As everyone is doing their best. Until the match with Riko and Nozomi, Nozomi had the upper hand as Riko is doubting herself. When Nagisa reminds her and shouts "One More Time." She tries her hardest, when the match ends in Riko losing and Nozomi winning. Riko walks out of the gym, as Nagisa tries to cheer her up. Kaoruko gives Ayano a pink handkerchief. Surprisingly Uchika shows up at the badminton tournament.
7"I'll Mop the Floor With Her"

Kaoruko watches Ayano's badminton match, who is facing one of her teammates and won. As Ayano was walking back to the stands, Kaoruko wants to beat her in badminton again. Ayano takes that in stride. In preparation, Kaoruko's teammates has faith in her to win against Ayano. When the next few matches ends, Yu lost her match and gone to the locker room. When Hayama Yukiteru follows Yu and gives her a corn dog. The next badminton match is Kaoruko facing Ayano, she returns Ayano's serves and was getting the upper hand. It tires her out and it doesn't go over the net, but hitting it instead. Until the short interval. Ayano keeps up with Kaoruko. As Megu Miki believe Kaoruko will win, who trains harder than anyone in their badminton club. The first set is won by Ayano, by a score of 21-17. The next set starts and is won by Ayano again. She gives the same pink handkerchief to Kaoruko, but Kaoruko didn't accept it and instead, heads back to the locker room. When Ayano walks out, thinking it was an easy win. While Elena comments at her, to not disrespect others. Yu looks at the tournament standings, which shows the next semifinal match is with Nagisa facing against Nozomi.
8"The Badminton I Want to Play"

In a flashback, at Totsuka middle school, a badminton match ended as Nozomi lost to Nagisa. As Riko was watching it. Miyako walks out of the restroom with Riko and saw that Nagisa is preparing for the semifinal match with Nozomi. But Riko says to her that the three of them went to the same middle school. Then Nagisa was favored to going to Zushi Sogo high school, on a scholarship. But Nozomi was picked instead. Kentarō checks up on Nagisa, to not over think about the match. Nozomi overhears a conversation with her opponent, after advancing to the semifinal match. Ayano started her badminton match, as the play lasted for a time, her opponent pulled a muscle. When she told them to quit, if unable to continue. Elena sees this and asks about Ayano's strange behavior. The semifinal match has started with Nagisa and Nozomi. Nozomi's serves starts to wear down Nagisa, as Ayano sees her strategy. Based on Nozomi's coach telling her what to do. During the interval her coach advises a strategy, but she doesn't reply back and got yelled at. It continues, when the second match starts. But Nozomi told her coach, I'll play my own style. After a long match, she lost to Nagisa. As Nozomi's coach told Kentarō that he was too hard on Nozomi.

Conny and Yuika visits Ayano's badminton club, which surprises them. Before the final match of the tournament. Where Ayano is facing against Nagisa. Conny wants a quick match with Ayano. But her keychain broke. Yuika advises Ayano to try at a local festival, which might have an arcade that has it. While being there, Yuika wins a whale backpack and gives it to Ayano. Later Ayano and Conny are talking alone. Conny nervously speaks to her. As Ayano pulls the backpack in front of Conny's face. She takes it away from her. Yuika and Elena got back, Conny gets to the point. That she, Ayano, and Uchika should be a family. Ayano interrupts her and wants to go somewhere. Yu is with Sora and asks about who got into badminton first, Hayama or Gaku. Sora, replys that Hayama invited her and Gaku to try the sport. Since they were little. They went to a badminton court, behind the batting cages. Conny starts first, as Ayano returns it. She shows her strange behavior, that Elena was concerned about. In Denmark, Conny recalls a time, Uchika began being her mother. One day she looks at Uchika's phone and saw a picture, Uchika said it's her daughter back in Japan. The match ends, when Ayano told her that she doesn't want a family with you. Later Conny and Yuika got back to the train station, as the rest of their club members welcome them back. Uchika surprises Ayano at home.

In a flashback, Nagisa started badminton in elementary school. Uchika has tea with Cho and Masashi as Ayano goes to her room instead. Suddenly at practice Ayano wants a match with Kentarō. Next she asks Nagisa for a quick match before their final match of the tournament. While Riko thought she was provoking Nagisa, about Ayano's remarks. Kentarō told Gaku and Hayama to be prepared for the boy's preliminary tournament. At the locker room Ayano was glaring at Nagisa, as she left to see Miyako and Kentarō. Kentarō asks about her knee. Which Nagisa replies it doesn't hurt. Miyako tells about Kentarō's time before quitting the Olympics, in which his knee was hurt too. Riko meets up with Nagisa and starts to worry about her knees too. Yu watches Hayama practice at night. The boy's preliminary tournament started with Gaku winning his match. When Hayama's match looks grim. Yu walks out of the gym and Nagisa speaks to her, if something happen between the two of them. With Gaku and Hayama both later losing in the tournament, Gaku wants to continue the sport into college. Yu watches Hayama practice at night again and gives him a water bottle, which surprises him. While also confessing her feelings to him. But Hayama thought Yu's message was about badminton, not him.
11"Because I Love Badminton"

At dinner, Uchika wants to reconnect with Ayano. As she goes to her room. At practice Yu and Riko notices Ayano is spacing out lately. Hayama and Guku shows up to practice, suddenly Ayano wants a match with Hayama and he lost. Ayano swiftly asks for another match. When Hayama tries to leave out of the gym. Nagisa steps in and tells Ayano to not be hasty about it. She asks Nagisa for a match too, but told her to wait until the tournament in two days. At the end of practice Nagisa went jogging and saw Riko with her siblings. Uchika tries to bond with Ayano again. At night Nagisa watches the badminton match between Kaoruko and Ayano, she pauses the video. When she seen the same expression Ayano had at the Junior Nationals. At the venue of the final match, Yuka and her friends shows up and speaks to Riko. About Nagisa's opponent is from the same high school as them. Both Ayano and Nagisa are preparing, as Ayano doesn't want Yu's encouragement. Elena takes her away and worries about her behavior, and regrets taking her to the badminton club. The match begins and Ayano is surprised by Nagisa's quick strategy. Uchika walks out to buy a drink. When Elena wants to talk to her.
12"Step Forward Already!"

In a flashback, Uchika goes through her suitcase, as Ayano tried to tell her about what happen. During the badminton match with Kaoruko in middle school. Ayano returns Nagisa's serve for a point, with a new strategy. Uchika tells Elena that she wanted to train Ayano. One day she went to the gym to see if Ayano is there. But Uchika secretly saw through the entrance window to the badminton court and watched her train by herself. Uchika decided to leave Ayano with her grandparents. As the first set is evenly contested, it wears down Ayano and Nagisa. The first set is won by Ayano, by a score of 21-16. Elena thinks badminton is just a sport. While Uchika views it as, you can be great and wealthy. But risking an injury can end your career. While choosing badminton over than your child. The second set starts with Ayano feeling cornered by Nagisa's serves. Kaoruko tries to encourage Ayano, but still feels pressured by Nagisa and lost. During the interval Ayano tells Yu and Sora to don't bother her. As Uchika and Elena heard it. The third set of the last match of the tournament begins with Ayano's side looking grim. Sora tells Ayano to don't lose on purpose.
13"On the Other Side of That Net"

The third set is starting to look less grim for Ayano, as she gains the advantage with a new strategy. While Nagisa starts to wear down and asks for a short break. To use a towel to wipe her face. The match is evenly contested. For the last match point, Kentarō sees Nagisa's new strategy and by using it. Her knee can give out, at a given notice. Ayano tries to return Nagisa's serve, but throws her racket towards the net instead. Nagisa wins the tournament. Yu and Sora carries Ayano back to the locker room. Uchika meets her there and asks if she, Ayano, and Conny take a trip to Denmark. Ayano declines and wants to stay in Japan. Elena talks to Ayano about what happen before the tournament ended. Nagisa talks to Riko and she was surprised that you won. The next day everyone meets up to the gym. As Riko tells them that Nagisa went to the hospital with Kentarō, to check up on her knees. Nagisa and Kentarō walks to the gym. As Nagisa tells them, she has Patellar tendinitis. Ayano uses her strange behavior to ask Nagisa for a match later on.
