Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre is a private hospital located in Bandra in Mumbai, India. The hospital was established in 1978 by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust.[1]

Hospital trustees have undertaken several initiatives to supply the hospital with the latest medical equipment and medication, and the hospital has been recognized as one of India's finest health care providers.[2]

Motto and mission

With the motto "More Than Healthcare, Human Care" and with the mission of providing affordable, high-quality health care,[3] the trustees of Lilavati Hospital have developed a specialty hospital in India that combines treatment, research, and education meeting international standards. Patients receive treatment and students get a medical education with the latest technological equipment and facilities.

History

In 1978, Shri Kirtilal Manilal Mehta—a diamond merchant fondly known as Bapaji, who in 1956 founded the Antwerp-based diamond company Gembel NV—established the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust in memory of his late wife, Smt. Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta. The trust has been managed, controlled, and administered by Mehta family members Prabodh Kirtilal Mehta, Rashmi Mehta, and Chetan Prabodh Mehta.

In 1997, the trust established Lilavati Hospital, with 314 beds, 12 operating theaters, 300 consultants, intensive care units (ICUs), and 1,800 staff members to provide care for 300 in-patients and 1,500 out-patients daily.[4]

Shri Kirtilal Manilal Mehta

Shri Kirtilal Manilal Mehta was born on 7 February 1907 in the city of Palanpur, India. After losing his father at the early age of 12, he joined his family business in Rangoon, Burma. Besides handling his family business, he launched another business segment of Diamond in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. Mumbai is where he also started Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust. It was his wife Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta's dream to open a medical facility offering a high standard medical treatment at affordable prices. She believed in equality of education and treatment, regardless of caste, creed, and income group. She died in 1964, leaving her esteemed presence in the lives of the people who knew her and knew that she believed in serving the public good.

Board Of Trustees

The roles and responsibilities of the Trustees[5] include the development and management of the facility and the oversight of patient care.

The current Board of Trustees includes Prabodh Kirtilal Mehta, Chetan Prabodh Mehta, Rashmi Kirtilal Mehta, Rekha Haresh Sheth, Sushila Vijay Mehta, Charu Kishor Mehta, Niket Vijay Mehta, Bhavin Rashmi Mehta, Nanik Rupani, S. Lakshminarayanan IAS, and K.K Modi.[6]

The hospital offers treatment in nuclear medicine and cardiac imaging, general surgery, diagnostic services, neurosciences, pediatrics, mental health and behavioral sciences, neurophthalmology, interventional cardiology, gynecology and obstetrics, rehabilitative services, scans, nephrology, orthopedics, pediatrics ophthalmology, pulmonology, maternity services, cardiac pacing, and electrophysiology.

Accreditation

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), has recently accredited Lilavati Hospital as a provider of medical treatment that meets high standards and utilizes the latest medical equipment, such as the fastest CT scanners.[8] NABH considered the level of treatment for different patients, the standard of control and prevention, and the responsiveness of the intensive care unit as key features that have matched NABH standards of accreditation.[9][10]

On receiving accreditation, trustees Prabodh Kirtilal Mehta and Chetan Prabodh Mehta said, "It will be the great honor for the whole team of the Lilavati Hospital that makes us more strict and exact towards the standard of offering medication and treatment across the nation."

Lilavati Hospital has earned several awards, such as Best Multi-Speciality Hospital in Metro, by ICICI Lombard and CNBC TV18 at the 2012 India Healthcare Awards, held in New Delhi.[11]
