Liam Agnew, born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear is an English footballer who plays for Harrogate Town as a midfielder. He previously played for Sunderland.[2]

Club career

Sunderland

Agnew attended Farringdon Community Academy and upon leaving joined Sunderland's Youth Academy. In April 2014, Agnew signed his professional contract at Sunderland, signing a two-year contract, keeping him until 2016.[3] Whilst on loan at Boston United, Agnew graduated to the first team squad at Sunderland and although he appeared as an unused substitute there, this did not affect his loan spell at Boston United.[4] Then, in the 2014–15 season, Agnew was given a number forty-two shirt.[5]

He made his first professional appearance for the club on 4 February 2015, appearing as a late substitute in a 3–1 FA Cup victory over Fulham.[6] Whilst at Sunderland Reserve Side, Agnew captained the reserve side for the next seasons there.[7][8][9]

At the end of the 2015–16 season, Agnew was released by the club, having made one appearance for Sunderland.[10]

Boston United

On 10 January 2014, Agnew joined Boston United on loan following the club's crisis, due to a growing injury list and suspensions.[11] Local newspaper Boston Standard reported the move as work experience.[12] Agnew made his Boston United debut the next day, where he made his first professional start, as well as debut, in a 4–2 win over Hednesford Town.[13] After extending his loan spell at Boston United, Agnew scored in his second meeting against Hednesford Town on 1 March 2014, Agnew scored his first professional goal, in a 4–0 win.[14][15] Three weeks later, on 29 March 2014, Agnew scored again, in a 2–0 win over Gloucester City.[16] After making ten appearance and scoring two times for Boston United, Agnew returned to his parent club in May 2014.[17]

After his release from Sunderland in the summer of 2016, he joined Boston United on a free transfer, where he had previously been on loan.[18][19][20] Agnew was expecting to join League One side Bradford City, having impressed Manager Phil Parkinson on trial.[21] However, the move collapsed, as Parkinson stated he remained unsure of the transfer move happening.[22]

Agnew made his second Boston United debut on 3 September 2016, where he scored again, in a 3–2 loss against F.C. United of Manchester.[23] Since then, Agnew became the club's captain.[24] By the end of September 2016, Agnew scored two more goals for Boston United against Alfreton Town[25] and Altrincham.[26] Having made a quick impact on his second spell at Boston United, Agnew hinted that he could earn a new contract by turning it from a non-contract basis.[27] It came after when Lincoln City keen on signing him, but this was denied by Manager Danny Cowley.[28] However, for the rest of the year, Agnew suffered a foot injury and didn't play for Boston United again.[29][30] Despite this, the club's manager Dennis Greene remained confident of keeping Agnew by offering a new contract.[31]

Harrogate Town

In January 2017, Liam moved to Harrogate Town who also play in the National North League.[32]

After appearing an unused substitute against his former club, Boston United, on 4 February 2017,[33] Agnew made his Harrogate Town debut, coming on as a second-half substitute, in a 3–0 win over Worcester City on 12 February 2017.[34]
