"Legacy" is the twelfth episode of the first season of the American television drama series Person of Interest. It is the 12th overall episode of the series and is written by Amanda Segel and directed by Brad Anderson. It aired on CBS in the United States and on CTV in Canada on January 19, 2012.

Plot

Reese (Jim Caviezel) finally decides to meet with Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson), who, by helping him and Finch (Michael Emerson) in their next case, is provided a little insight into what he and Finch do. Their case is Andrea Gutierrez (April Hernandez-Castillo), a self-made attorney who specializes in suing the state of New York on behalf of convicts who claim they were wrongfully imprisoned. Reese and Finch believe the threat to Andrea will be associated with her latest client, Terrence King (Curtiss Cook).

King's parole officer, Dominic Galuska (Vito D'Ambrosio), has been setting up convicts to go to prison and profiting off placing their children in foster care. In representing King, Andrea has come to the attention of people who want her silenced. Meanwhile, Reese realizes that, despite trusting his life to Finch, his partner is still keeping secrets from him. He follows Finch to a meeting with Will Ingram (Michael Stahl-David), the son of Finch's previous partner, Nathan Ingram. After Finch bails him out of police custody, Will begins asking questions about his father's death, the nature of his work and his connection to Finch.

In its original American broadcast, "Legacy" was seen by an estimated 14.40 million household viewers and gained a 3.2/8 ratings share among adults aged 18–49, according to Nielsen Media Research.[1] This was a 4% decrease in viewership from the previous episode, which was watched by 14.86 million viewers with a 3.2/8 in the 18-49 demographics.[2] With these ratings, Person of Interest was the third most watched show on CBS for the night beating The Mentalist but behind ¡Rob!, second on its timeslot and fourth for the night in the 18-49 demographics, behind Grey's Anatomy, ¡Rob!, The Big Bang Theory, and American Idol.

Critical reviews

"Legacy" received generally positive reviews from critics. Keysha Couzens of TV Overmind wrote "But what made the hour worth watching would be the continued integration of Det. Carter into the main cases as well as another piece of Finch's back-story puzzle. It's well-known how happy that made me, and hopefully other viewers as well, that we're continuing to get a little more lately about Finch's mysterious falling out with his former partner."[3]

Luke Gelineau of TV Equals wrote "After last week’s super episode (Pun intended), I was hoping for this week to really pick it up. Seeing that Reese is having Finch followed is an interesting turn of events, so we’ll see where that goes!"[4] Tim Surette of TV.com wrote, "'Legacy' didn't blow me away, but it maintained Person of Interest's momentum and provided several great moments. Most importantly, it allowed Reese to return to causing mayhem in the city with his knuckle sandwich food cart."[5]

Sean McKenna of TV Fanatic gave the episode a 4.1 star rating out of 5 and wrote "'Legacy' proved to be another entertaining episode that effectively weaved in some personal larger story issues and potential plot lines while linking it to the case of the week. Sure, it didn't have the most exciting bad guy, but it did give all the characters something to do while continuing to push the idea of the 'good' Machine and sprinkling in some future conflict between our favorite crime saving heroes."[6]
