Andertons Music Co. is a musical instrument retailer based in Guildford, Surrey, UK. It is best known for its online presence: Andertons' online store is one of the United Kingdom's top e-commerce sites,[1] with online sales approaching $40 million per year.[2] Andertons is widely known among guitarists for online video demonstrations conducted by owner Lee "The Captain" Anderton and Rob "Chappers" Chapman.[3]

History

Andertons Music Co. is a family-owned business founded in 1964 by Harry and Peter Anderton. Peter's son, Lee, is the current managing director. They founded the company when Harry took out his police pension in one lump sum and moved back to Guildford, where his wife came from. Both Harry and Peter were well connected with high-profile musicians and Peter had experience working in a guitar shop on Fulham Road in London.[4]

The shop originally opened in Stoke Fields, Guildford, now renamed Haydon Place. Andertons moved to the current Woodbridge Road building 500 metres away in 1990.[5]

A 50-year celebration was held at Guildford Cathedral in 2014, bringing together staff, customers, suppliers and family members to share their memories of working at the store.[6] The company also expanded its warehouse during a much need transformation in the same year. Floor space was upgraded from 30,000 square feet to 90,000sq.ft. This included the installation of a new, sophisticated conveyor system and a click and collect area.[7] Andertons employ over 65 people and are continuously growing.[8]

Andertons became the first music retailer outside America to win NAMM Dealer of The Year in 2018, beating the likes of Guitar Center and Sweetwater to the award.[9]

They currently sell close to 400 brands worldwide through their website, whilst maintaining just the one family-run shop. Andertons are well-known for selling guitars, but also stock a huge array of drums, basses, keyboards, synths, audio equipment and more.[10] Andertons have a large social media following, with over 80,000 Facebook likes[11], 80,000 Instagram followers[12] and 24,000 Twitter followers[13].

YouTube

Andertons opened its primary YouTube channel in 2007, originally with the goal of highlighting product sales and featuring product reviews. The channel currently has over 400,000 subscribers and has passed 100 million video views.[14]

In addition to product reviews and demonstrations, Andertons has featured interviews with many notable guitarists and guitar makers, including Joe Bonamassa, Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Albert Lee, John Petrucci, Paul Reed Smith, and Steve Vai.[15]

One of their most popular series is the long-running 'Sound Like...' where presenters Matt Hornby and Rabea Massaad attempt to recreate the guitar and bass sounds of popular musicians. They set out to do this either on a budget or by spending as much as they can.[16]
