Lara Heller is an English actress best known for The Cut, Breaking the Bank, In the Name of Ben Hur, and The Countdown.[1] She speaks English, German, French and Persian fluently.[2]
Early life and education
Heller was born in Brighton, England and raised in Luxembourg and Germany, where she attended the European School of Luxembourg.[3] She represented both Luxembourg and Germany as a competitive figure skater nationally and internationally.[2] She studied law at the London School of Economics, where she performed in several plays,[4] and graduated with a Master of Arts in Acting from the Arts Educational Schools in London.[5]
Career
After graduating, Heller was cast in Fatih Akin's 2014 drama film The Cut,[6] which was nominated for a Golden Lion award at the 71st Venice International Film Festival[7] and was awarded a special mention at the 2014 Vittorio Veneto Film Festival.[8] The film follows a young Armenian father searching for his twin daughters, both of whom are played by Heller, during the Armenian Genocide.[9] The film was praised by Martin Scorsese, who stated:
"Fatih Akin's The Cut is a genuine, hand-made epic, of the type that people just don't make anymore. In other words, a deeply personal response to a tragic historical episode, that has great intensity, beauty and sweeping grandeur. This picture is very precious to me, on many levels."[10]
That same year, Heller appeared as Stephanie Agincourt in Vadim Jean's film Breaking The Bank.[11] The following year, she was cast in the lead role of Lucia in In The Name Of Ben Hur.[12] She was then offered the role of Circe / Shadow Warrior in the 2017 film Troy The Odyssey, for which she practiced archery, horse riding, sword fighting and hand-to-hand combat techniques for the role.[13]
In 2018, she was cast in the role of Duffy in the British crime thriller Welcome To Curiosity, opposite Richard Blackwood.[14][15][16] The role of Duffy was originally written for a man but the producers decided to re-write the character as a woman for Heller.[17]
Heller has also written and produced for films.
