The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds are the 16 sports teams representing Long Island University's campus in Brooklyn, New York in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and track; women's-only bowling, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and volleyball; and men's-only baseball. The Blackbirds compete in NCAA Division I and are members of the Northeast Conference.[2]
A member of the Northeast Conference, LIU Brooklyn sponsors teams in six men's and thirteen women's NCAA sanctioned sports:[3]
The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds will pass into history when LIU merges them with the Division II LIU Post Pioneers after the 2018-19 academic year. The new program will compete under the LIU name with a blue and gold color scheme, while alumni and students of the two campuses will select a new nickname and mascot.[4][5]
Origin of "Blackbirds" nickname
In the 1920s, the University's teams were known as the Blue Devils due to their blue uniforms. However in 1935, the schools uniforms changed to black. When a reporter from the Midwest who worked for the Brooklyn Eagle, he said that the team looked like Blackbirds from back home, and the nickname stuck.[6]

- Women's ice hockey will begin playing during the 2019-2020 season.[7] Men’s Division 1 Wrestling will begin play in 2019-20 as a member of the EIWA conference.
