LEIA Inc is a Silicon Valley company developing a lightfield display technology platform for mobile devices. Through Nanotechnology and Software innovation, the company empowers device manufacturers and content providers in various industries to create the next digital experience for consumers.

The company was founded in 2014 by David Fattal, Zhen Peng and Pierre-Emmanuel Evreux as a technology spin-off from Hewlett-Packard laboratories.

LEIA Inc is headquartered in Menlo Park, California, with a nanofabrication center in Palo Alto and industrialization center in Suzhou, China.

History

The early days : Laser-based multiview display prototype developed at HP Labs in 2011

LEIA’s display technology comes from years of research at HP Labs in Palo Alto.

After working on a laser-based version in 2011, the team transitioned to a more standard LED-based illumination system in 2012 when they realized that the technology was compatible with LCD displays.

In 2013, the first dynamic prototypes were demonstrated and the technology was featured on the cover of Nature Magazine.[1] MIT’s Technology Review named David Fattal, LEIA Inc’s Founder and CEO, French Innovator of the year for the invention of the multiview backlight the same year.[2]

In January 2014, LEIA Inc was officially founded as an independent entity.

In October 2015, LEIA Inc released a Holographic Dev Kit to let developers experiment with interactive holograms on a 2.2’’ display.

In April 2016, LEIA Inc announced a partnership with Technology and Media group Altice to release a holographic smartphone in the European market.[3]

Diffractive Lightfield Backlighting (DLB)

LEIA's core technology augments the backlight of a standard LCD screen with Nanotechnology and lets it switch seamlessly between a standard mode and a lightfield mode. Standard mode preserves all characteristics of the original display (resolution, brightness, etc...). Lightfield mode can be used for a host of applications ranging from displaying holographic content to creating a custom privacy viewing zone.

SDK

In addition to the hardware, LEIA is developing software tools to create or adapt content to its holographic platform. The current focus is on Android via a Unity 3D plug-in.
