The Kymi Ring is a motor racing circuit under construction in Iitti, Kymenlaakso, Finland, bordering regional capital Kouvola, and located 110 kilometres (68 mi) north-east of the capital Helsinki. The circuit, when finished, will become the first circuit in Finland to have a FIA Grade 1 license. It will host the MotoGP Finnish Grand Prix, returning to the schedule in 2019 after 34 years of absence. Due to its Grade 1 license Kymi Ring will be able to host any FIA-sanctioned competition, such as Formula 1, even though arranging a F1 Grand Prix has initially been deemed too expensive.[3]

Facilities

The main racetrack, designed by Pohjola and Apex will be 4.6-kilometre (2.9 mi) long. In addition, the complex will have a 1.56-kilometre (0.97 mi) rallycross track with a 0.1-kilometre (0.062 mi) joker bend, diverting from the main circuit's finish line.

Driver training facilities for the use of local driving schools will be located next to the main track, using parts of the track to provide various customisable training modules. A traffic safety theme park for families with children is also included in the plans.

Kymi Ring in its entirety covers an area of 1.8 square kilometres (0.69 sq mi). The infield of the track can be utilised as a venue for fairs, festivals and other mass events, with room for hospitality and dining services. Potential businesses, especially those of the automotive trade, have been designated a business park area at the circuit's outskirts, next to the main road 12.

Accommodation services at the circuit consist mainly of trackside cabins, called "toy barns" by the circuit management.[4] Any potential hotels at the venue will be built at a later stage.

Competitions

In July 2017, Kymi Ring and Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder of MotoGP, signed a five-year contract for organising the Finnish Grand Prix. The Finnish Grand Prix is due to take place in 2019, after nearly 40 years of wait. In August 2018, it was confirmed that the race would not return until 2020. The track is not completed in time for the 2019 Finnish Motorcycle GP. The wait is 38-39 years for the race.

The existing World RX of Finland will move to Kymi Ring when it is finished.

There have been initial talks about holding touring car competitions at the circuit. DTM and WTCC are listed as possible events on Kymi Ring's website,[5] amongst the FIA World Endurance Championship and two-wheel sports such as enduro and speedway.
