Kuybyshev Square (Russian: Площадь Куйбышева) is a square in the historical center of Samara, Russia. It is located between the streets of Chapaevskaya, Vilonovska, Galaktionovskaya and Krasnoarmeyskaya. It is one of Samara's central squares. At fifteen hectares, it is one of the largest city squares in the world; the largest in Russia and Europe.[2] and the 5th largest in the world.[3]


The Samara State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is located in the square, along with a monument to Valerian Kuybyshev and four public gardens covering seven hectares.

History

In 1894, the area was named Cathedral Square. The main cathedral that was on the square would be blown up in 1930.[4][5] In 1941, the Square hosted a parade in honor of the 24th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution because it was considered a wartime capital for the USSR.[6] In honor of this parade, annual military parades on the square have taken place since 2011. In 1935, square was renamed to Kuybyshev Square along with Samara in honor of Valerian Kuybyshev, who died that year.[7]
