Kurtis Gabriel (born April 20, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He is currently playing with the Binghamton Devils in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract with the New Jersey Devils organization of National Hockey League (NHL). Gabriel was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the 3rd round (81st overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
Gabriel played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2010 to 2014, all with the Owen Sound Attack. Prior to this he played all but two years of his hockey as a part of the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association at various levels from AE (Alternate Entry) to AA. He played for the Richmond Hill Stars (now known as the South Central Coyotes AAA Atoms (2003–04)and for the Markham Waxers AAA Midgets (2009–10).
Undrafted, Gabriel was invited to training camp and made the Owen Sound Attack as a walk-on in 2010. After his first season in the OHL, Gabriel was not drafted at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He attended the Phoenix Coyotes Rookie Camp as a free agent invitee in 2011.[1]
On March 3, 2014, the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League (NHL) signed Gabriel to a three-year entry-level contract.[2]
In the 2015–16 season, on April 18, 2016, Gabriel was called up to the Minnesota Wild and appeared in Game 3 of a playoff series against the Dallas Stars.
During the 2016–17 season, on February 27, 2017 Gabriel was suspended for 6 AHL games from the Iowa Wild for off ice actions taking place two days prior.[3] Unable earn a recall to Minnesota through the 2017–18 season in playing with Iowa, Gabriel left as a free agent after parts of 5 seasons within the Wild organization.
On July 2, 2018, Gabriel signed a one-year, two-way contract with the New Jersey Devils.[4]
