Kumkum  Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan[1] (Hindustani pronunciation: [ˈkʊmkʊm]; English: A Lovely Bond) is a daytime Indian television series that aired on STAR Plus channel from 15 July 2002 to 13 March 2009.The show has Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi parmar in leading roles as Sumit and Kumkum.It remains one of the longest running successful shows on Indian television in the afternoon slot with a total run of 7 years.[2]Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi parmar aka Sumit and Kumkum's onscreen chemistry is a primary highpoint of the whole series.[3]

Plot summary

The soap opera tells the tale of the Wadhwa family and its daughter-in-law, Kumkum. She is happily married to Jatin. However, he dies of a brain tumor while she is expecting their first child. The Wadhwas decide to get their young daughter-in-law remarried, and find an eligible young man named Vishal. However, when obstacles arise leading to marriage being called off on the last day, Jatin's younger brother Sumit impulsively marries Kumkum in order to save her from societal disgrace.

The crux of the story evolves as a blossoming romance between Sumit and kumkum leads them to realise that they are soulmates forever and how Kumkum being the ideal daughter in law of the wadhwa family protects Sumit's family inspite of adverse circumstances rising up against them.Sumit and Kumkum's story moves ahead with their grown up kids Dhruv,Sharman and Aashka and Kumkum's role to establish harmony in the wadhwa family.However in a series of events Kumkum and sumit die before they complete a ritual that would enable them to be soulmates and are reborn again without any memory of their past life.In the new life after overcoming all obstacles,the story ends with Sumit and Kumkum remarriying at the sacred pilgrimage centre again this time to be united forever.
